CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTON

The SIWES is the skilled program which forms the basic part of the approved

minimum academic standard in the various Degree/ Diploma/ N.C.E. programs for

all Nigerian Tertiary Institution. This program tends to bridge the gap existing

between theoretical part of study and the practical aspect of the course especially

engineering, science and other profession program in Nigeria Tertiary Institution.

The program aimed at exposing students to machines and equipment, professional

work method and ways of safe guarding the work areas and workers in industries

and organizations.

The students’ needs and extra knowledge and experience both theoretically and

practical in all courses. This motivated the government to introduce the Industrial

Training Fund (I.T.F) established under decree on.7 of 1971 as a manpower

training development agency (M.T.D.A) of the federal polytechnic of Nigeria. The

I.T.F made it possible for the introduction of student’s industrial work experience

scheme (S.I.W.E.S.)

The scheme is a tripartite program involving the tertiary institutions and the
industry (employers of labor) and the industrial training fund (I.T.F).

8
1.1 DEFINITION OF SIWE

Student industrial work experiences scheme (SIWES) is skill acquisition training

programmed that form part of the minimum academic requirements, standards in

various degree programmed of the Nigeria tertiary institution, it seeks to bridge the

gap existing between theory and practical of engineering, technology, sciences and

professional educational programmed in Nigeria.

1.2 BENEFITS OF STUDENTS INDUSTRIAL WORK SCHEME (SIWES).

CHAPTER THREE

3.0 EXPERIENCE GAINED

It was a great experience working for four months at Department in Electrical

Electronic in Federal Polytechnic Bauchi (FPTB). The system permitted me to

alternate between engineering working departments after some time. This has

greatly improved my general perception about engineering and quite particularly

electrical is all about. I work in computer lab and carried out maintenance as well

installation of solar panel in parallel and series connection health and safety at

work act 1974

1. Maintenance and repairs

2. Introductions to basic logic operation

3. Installation of solar panel

4. Electrical workshop practice

5. Introduction to basic logic operation

3.1 THE HEALTH AND SAFETY WORK ACT 1974

It state that a curt of conduct to all people in working place including employee

and employer with the exception of (house boy/ house girl).

1. Safety wears include cloth, booth, goggles and helmet.

2. First aid box (screw driver and other tool)

14
3. Keep the environment neat

4. Use correct size of protective devices e.g. E.L.C.B (earth linkage circuit

breaker)

5. Switched gear section by using correct rating

6. Adequate acting system

3.2 MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR

AIM: To show either the student or trainer the best method when carrying an

electrical system or any device that will roan smoothly

Theory: maintains is all proceeds nursery to keep an item in or restoring it to, A

serviceable condition include servicing, repair, modification, modernization,

overall inspection etc.

3.2.1 MAINTAINES IS OF TWO TYPES

1. Preventive which is carried on the system to prevent the system from

developing error in the earlier stage of its life span.it is carried out at list one

in a month or depending on what is being used for.

2. Corrective maintenance which deles with the correction of the error that

occurs before generating to a breakdown. It deal with the replacement of any

hardware component that is faulty or that has caused the fault and is carried

out both on hardware and software

15
3.3 INTRODUCTION TO BASIC LOGIC OPERATION

In its basic form, logic is the realm of human rising that full you a certain

propositional (declarative statement) is through it certain condition are true or

force. Many situation and processes you encounter in dally live can be expiries in

form propositional or logic, function. Sine such function are true or force or yes, no

statement digital circuit with the two “state characteristics are applicable

Several proportion statements the light is ON will be true if the bulb is not bounced

out and if the switch is on is true. Therefor is logical statement can be Made “the

light is on only if the bulb is not bounced out and switch is ON “in this example

the first statement are true. The first statement (the light is ON) is then the basic

proposition, and the other two statements are the condition on which the

proposition depended. Three basic logic operations (NOT, AND, and OR) are

indicated by stranded distinctive shape symbol

3.4 ELECTRICAL WORKSHOP PRACTICE

To providing skill in the use of electrical tools and to improve the skill of students

by making the house wring small circuits and to develop the level of practical

1. plier-they are used for twisting or losing of the cable or not

2. knives- it is use for piling of cable insulation and other manger courting

3. hammers- is use of posing in Nell or making hall with roll plug

4. mallets- for smiting the surface of a situation or open a cost object

5. screw drive- use for driving in or out screws

17
6. side cutler- use for cutting of cable

7. longer noises- it is use for griping cable

8. test screw drive- or testing lamp- it is use to check current in a circuit

3.5 SOLAR INSTALLATION

Solar system are an environmentally friendly way of producing electrically for

domestic usage, the technology relies on photovoltaic (PV) cells to turn sunlight

into electricity

Important factor considered when installing solar panel

1. Location: when installation the solar panel, it must not face the direction of

either sunrise or sunset, in order to achieve an optimized energy, form the

solar panel, therefore the solar panel must face direction of the sun path

2. Seasons: solar panel receive more direct ultra-violet ray of the sunlight

during the summer (dry season) then in the rainy season even though the

panel was often set to the latitude of an angle equal to the latitude

3. Climate: solar arrays are most sufficient in the brightest day. Direct sunlight

efficiency can dramatically be reducing if the sky is overcast

4. Obstacle or shade: anything that block the sunlight from falling on the solar

panel will reduce the efficiency of the array, which include shadows from

nearest building, tree branches, leaves, dust and other debris

18
3.5.1 VARIOUS CONNECTIONS OF BATTERIES

The runtime of an inverter powered by batteries is dependent on the battery power

and the amount of power being drawn from the inverter at a given time. As the

amount of equipment using the inverter increases, the runtime will decrease. In

order to prolong the runtime of an inverter, additional batteries can be added to the

inverter. When attempting to add more batteries to an inverter, there are three basic

options for installation:

Parallel connections

Series connection

CHAPTER 4

4.1 CONCLUTION

I will like to conclude this report by appreciating the founding father of SIWES for

their foresight if this program is properly carried out it can equip the student to fit

into the industrial world of our nation

4.2 RECOMMENDATION

The industrial training fund (ITF) should be adequately founded to ease the

hardship usually face by student on (IT) and also to keep the vision of SIWES

founding father alive

In view of my experience during my industrial training, the following

recommendations

Are made to the students, university, industrial training fund (I.T.F) and the

companies:

1. Students should personally ensure that they get a good placement for the

program in time to commence and gain the best from the months.

2. Students should make sure that the entire period for the attachment is

completed before bowing out of the program.

3. Also, student should have a focused mind and interest as it will help them

get the maximum knowledge attainable from the company attached to

21
4. Not all students have the opportunity of getting good industrial training

placement, so the university should ensure they establish good relationships

with companies, firms and organizations capable of assisting in the SIWES

program on a yearly basis thereby helping the less privileged students.

5. On the part of I.T.F, Student supervision should also be intensified to make

the program more effective.

6. The firms should ensure that a well-structured program for the period of

training is spelt out and be seriously adhered to, so that students can benefit.

7. Also, the firms should see their role in the program as one of contributing t0

the nation’s educational system and not as a means of exploiting I.T students

as cheap labor.
