Dieting on a budget
Save money without sacrificing quality by buying less expensive
cuts of meat. Try using a slow cooker. A slow cooking method
for budget cuts in a bit of liquid results in deliciously tender and
flavourful meat. Look for cross rib, top blades or bottom blade
roasts. These also come in boneless but you will pay more. If
you don’t have a slow cooker, use a pot with a cover, cook slowly
covered for 4-5 hours. You can also cook your vegetables in the
same pot, saves on cleaning up.
Chicken is a great source of protein, and the white meat of the
breast is the best, but it will be more expensive. Purchase the
chicken with the bones in and remove the bones and fatty skin
yourself. You can save as much as $1.00 a pound.
Fresh vegetables are the best way to go, but not always the most
economical; frozen veggies have almost as much nutritional
value as fresh vegetables, and are cheaper. You cam also choose
canned veggies, but watch for the sodium content.
We are supposed to have five servings fruits and veggies per
day, and it is expensive to do so. Fresh fruit is sometimes priced
so that you need a bank loan or a 2nd mortgage to buy it. Check
out the sales on canned fruit but once again make sure it is in
its own juice, and not syrup. This will help provide you with the
fruit that you need. Juices are very high in sugar, but make sure
to read your labels.
During the cold winter months, soups and stews are a good
choice of vegetables. You would use half the meat or fish, but still
be getting your needed vegetables. For the meat stews, let the
broth cool, clean off the fat that will accumulate on the top. 920

K.V. Crusaders
With only two months until the end of the
year, there are several events coming up that
students, especially in those in grade twelve,
might want to know about.
The annual Grad Class Variety Show is
scheduled for Thursday, May 19th. The show
will begin at 7:00pm in the KVHS theatre.
All proceeds will go toward scholarships for
grads.
Rugby Mayhem, a Safegrad fundraiser, is coming up on
Saturday, May 14th. This fundraiser is going to be at the KVHS
Usher Miller Field from 10:00 – 3:00pm. The girls’ game is at
11:00am and the boys’ game is at 1:00pm. There is also going to
be a BBQ and face painting, and an outdoor Zumba class that
begins at 10:00am. Admission is $5/adults and $3/students, and
it is $2 to participate in the Zumba class.
The following week, there is no school on Monday, May 23rd
(Victoria Day) and that Saturday, May 28th, there will be a
second fundraiser for Safegrad at M&M meats.
Friday, June 3rd is Transition Day, which is an opportunity for
future Crusaders to get a look at what KVHS is like. Grade 8
students spend the day at the school, where they get a tour as
well as information about what to expect next year. There is no
school for grade nine students on this day. 205
