“Playset”
When I was a little tyke (10 or 20 years ago I think), I had the
most marvelous play set pile of dirt and some toy vehicles, a
railing on the back stoop that was my horse for many an hour,
a Buntline Special (the same gun used by Wyatt Earp), and of
course my imagination. I have never once felt that my childhood
was in anyway deficient because of the somewhat sparse amount
of equipment, because the richness of what I had was in my own
imagination. That horse and I chased down so many bad guys
that jails all across the west were over flowing.
In contrast, I was recently assigned to assemble with help, one
of those new fangled playsets, for the grand-granddaughter;
600 pieces of wood, 5000 pieces of nuts, bolts, screws and
brackets. With hard work, great assistance, and minor mistakes
the assembly was done in 2 days!! It’s a great play set and the
Carmen Kid does seem to enjoy it, but she also loves to play in
the mud with a $1.00 shovel and a few twigs, making a birthday
cake for her imaginary friend.
So while there is nothing bad about a child having an expensive
play set, we should never believe that we have significantly
improved the child’s overall well being either. Strong parental
ties and mature guidance are far more valuable to a young child’s
growth than all the expensive toys in the world. Young children
with some guidance and example can find fascination and
learning everywhere around them. Computers, video games,
electronic toys and gizmos can be educational aids or they can
be ineffective babysitters. The quality of childhood is far more
linked to significant parental involvement, exposure to other
nurturing adults, and also some alone time without electronic
sitters .. Just themselves and a few basic toys or tools.
A couple of hours spent helping out around the house with
cooking, cleaning, laundry and other chores will be far more
beneficial to the entire family than a couple of hours parked
watching cartoons.
Just a few more thoughts for the day!! “If you do not know
where you are going, every road will get you nowhere.” -- Henry
Kissinger “Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if
you just sit there.” -- Will Rogers 800

Excavating the Treasure of

Change Workshop
We crave it, sometime count it outright , and then fiercely resist
when it’s close at hand: if change is the pulse of life, why do
we want things to stay the same? What part does habit play in
seeking stability? When do routines work against our own good?
And what does the research have to say about this paradox?
This workshop taking place on Wednesday, May 18th will look
at how we can mine the past for experiences of change to help
face the present (let alone the future) with more openness,
curiosity, and courage. A sampling of techniques and resources
will be offered for treating flux as the rich resource it may be for
individuals as well as groups and organizations. The facilitator of
this workshop will be Gail Taylor
All Education Programs are sponsored by the United Way of
Greater Saint John.
The Workshop will take place at the Saint John Volunteer
Centre, 66 Waterloo Street, Training Room Suite 224 from
12noon to 1:00pm. To pre register call 506-658-1555 or email

10 years olds help Mind Care
With the Tim Horton’s World 3 on 3 Street Hockey Championship
getting closer and closer, the 10 year olds from the KV Legends
were starting to practice. With their sticks in hand, gear on and
ready to play; the only thing missing were their jerseys. With a
corporate donation from Darren Bishop of Bishop’s Windows
and Doors Ltd in Rothesay, NB, the kids still fell short from their
target to pay for their jerseys.
This is when a brilliant idea came in from one of the players, to
do a bottle drive and raise enough money to pay for the jerseys
and donate the remainder of the money to Mind Care. So the
following Saturday morning, the KV Legends began at 10 am
and finished early lunchtime, running from house to house
collecting cash and bottle donations. With the kind generosity
of their community, the kids managed to raise an impressive
$522.50. After paying the remaining money for the jerseys, the
KV Legends are donating the extra $300.00 to Mind Care.
A big thank you to members of KV Legends: Alex Graham,
Andrew Bishop, Matthew Hallett, Nathan Fearn, Craig Hooper,

Protect Your Bike From Theft
It can take less than 30 seconds for someone to steal a bike in
broad daylight. Allstate Insurance Company of Canada wants
to ensure that Canadian cyclists are doing enough to protect
their bikes. While bike locks are a theft deterrent, they are not
theft proof. Between bolt cutters and hacksaws, it doesn’t take
long for an ill-willed person to pick out a bike, break through

something every bike owner should absolutely invest in. But

Choosing the Right Summer Camp
Summer may seem far away but it is not too early to begin thinking
about how your child is going to fill their day once school is out.
Summer Camps provide children with an opportunity for fun
and adventure, to participate in some of their favorite activities
or perhaps try something new. Whether it is day or residential
camping, children can participate in an array of experiences that
are sure to create memories that will last a lifetime. While life
long friendships are formed, parents can be happy knowing that
through these camp experiences children are participating in
social and physical activities, mastering new skills and gaining
self confidence. With a variety of options, it is important to find
the camp that is right for your family. Some things to consider
are:
Family Needs: Different camps work for different families.
Does your child require special attention and if so can the camp
accommodate your child? Is your child ready to stay overnight at
camp or is an outdoor day camp a good starting point? Does the
camp have early drop off/late pick up to accommodate working
families? Educational or activity focused? Is transportation
provided?
Staff: These individuals will be caring for your precious person
and need to be carefully selected. Is the Camp Director willing
and able to answer your questions? How long has the camp been
in business and is it a reputable company? What kind of training
does the camp staff have? What is the staff:child ratio?
Programming/Activities: A busy child is a happy child and
there are a variety of camps out there to choose from. Are there
choices to suit your child’s interests – traditional, sports, arts or
outdoors? Are there a variety of activities within the camp? Are
the activities age appropriate?
Facilities: Whether it is day or residential camping, the condition
of the camp and what it has to offer will make an impact on

Dieting on a budget
Save money without sacrificing quality by buying less expensive
cuts of meat. Try using a slow cooker. A slow cooking method
for budget cuts in a bit of liquid results in deliciously tender and
flavourful meat. Look for cross rib, top blades or bottom blade
roasts. These also come in boneless but you will pay more. If
you don’t have a slow cooker, use a pot with a cover, cook slowly
covered for 4-5 hours. You can also cook your vegetables in the
same pot, saves on cleaning up.
Chicken is a great source of protein, and the white meat of the
breast is the best, but it will be more expensive. Purchase the
chicken with the bones in and remove the bones and fatty skin
yourself. You can save as much as $1.00 a pound.
Fresh vegetables are the best way to go, but not always the most
economical; frozen veggies have almost as much nutritional
value as fresh vegetables, and are cheaper. You cam also choose
canned veggies, but watch for the sodium content.
We are supposed to have five servings fruits and veggies per
day, and it is expensive to do so. Fresh fruit is sometimes priced
so that you need a bank loan or a 2nd mortgage to buy it. Check
out the sales on canned fruit but once again make sure it is in
its own juice, and not syrup. This will help provide you with the
fruit that you need. Juices are very high in sugar, but make sure
to read your labels.
During the cold winter months, soups and stews are a good
choice of vegetables. You would use half the meat or fish, but still
be getting your needed vegetables. For the meat stews, let the
broth cool, clean off the fat that will accumulate on the top. 920
