STAPHYLOCOCCUS & STREPTOCOCCUS

What is some test that can be done to differentiate Staphylococcus aureus from Staphylococcus
lugdunensis?

S. lugdunensis can usually be successfully identified based on a positive catalase test,

negative tube coagulase test, positive PYR test, and a positive ornithine decarboxylase test. All
other staphylococci are coagulase negative. They are salt tolerant and often hemolytic.

HEMOLYSIS AND LANCEFIELD GROUPING

Streptococcus pyogenes

Streptococcus pyogenes, or Group A beta-hemolytic Strep (GAS), displays beta

hemolysis. Some weakly beta-hemolytic species cause intense beta hemolysis when grown
together with a strain of Staphylococcus. This is called the CAMP test.

Streptococcus pneumoniae

S. pneumoniae, have not been assigned to a group because their antigen extracts fail to
react with group antisera. Except for S. pneumoniae all the equine streptococci belong to
Lancefield group C. Streptococcus pneumoniae and other streptococci produce a greenish halo
on blood agar plates referred to as alpha-hemolysis. This phenotype is utilized by clinical
microbiology laboratories to report culture findings of alpha-hemolytic streptococci, including S.
pneumoniae, and other bacteria.

Viridans Streptococci

The viridans streptococci are a large group of commensal streptococcal Gram-positive

bacteria species that are α-hemolytic, producing a green coloration on blood agar plates (hence
the name "viridans", from Latin "vĭrĭdis", green).

Streptococcus agalactiae

Streptococcus agalactiae (also known as group B streptococcus or GBS) is a gram-

positive coccus (round bacterium) with a tendency to form chains (as reflected by the genus
name Streptococcus). It is a beta-hemolytic, catalase-negative, and facultative anaerobe.
