What is SIS
SIS is the electronic service tool that Caterpillar dealers, customers and
employees rely on for their parts and service information needs. SIS
provides information for all Caterpillar machines and engines from 1977.
SIS is available on the Internet, DVDs and a network version based on the
DVD standalone application.

SIS Web is updated continually and is the most complete and up to date
version of SIS. SIS DVD and Network SIS use the same information that is
located on the monthly data DVD’S. The time required to stage and ship
the DVD’S to Dealer’s and Customer’s accounts for the delay in information
that may be available from SIS DVD/Network.

SIS DVD is the standalone version of SIS and is required when the Caterpillar
Inc. server for SIS Web or the Dealer server for Network SIS is not
available. Field Mechanics may be the largest group that use SIS DVD
Starting with the November, 2004 release of SIS DVD/Network 2004B, all
three versions of SIS require an Internet Browser to display SIS
information.
SIS Hardware Requirements
SIS DVD requires more RAM memory, faster processor and hard disk space than
Network SIS or SIS Web. This is due to the requirement to install the SIS DVD
application on each personal computer. The SIS DVD application enables SIS to
be displayed within a Web Brower. An example of a web browser is Microsoft
Windows Internet Explorer. Network SIS and SIS Web resource requirements are
the same.
SIS Web and Network SIS requires that some files be installed on the personal
computer. A software installation comparable to SIS DVD is not required. A
graphics plug-in is needed to enhance graphics functionality. The graphics plug-in
are located in the SIS Network or SIS Web downloads area. The internet web
browser has all other necessary files to display SIS information.
While Caterpillar continues to strive for the highest quality software solutions, it is
impossible to test every solution on the limitless combinations of hardware
available. For this reason, Caterpillar recommends that dealers purchase IBM,
Dell, or Hewlett Packard products.
The following configurations are recommended to run Service Information System

SIS DVD Installation
SIS DVD requires that a full application install is performed on each computer that uses SIS DVD.
The install application runs from the SIS standalone install CD. SIS DVD can also be installed from
the Service Technician Workbench (STW) install CD. The install information currently exists within
the Installation Guide or the Administration guide located on the SIS DVD install CD or STW install
CD. Refer to the training folder on either CD.
User names are imported into each computer or the user names can be created on each computer by a
SIS administrator.
The graphics plug-in is installed automatically when SIS DVD is installed. Adobe Acrobat Reader
and Internet Explorer are required to run SIS DVD.
Start SIS DVD
SIS DVD: A SIS icon should exist on the desktop to start SIS if SIS is not started automatically
when the computer starts. The default process during the SIS DVD install is to start SIS when the
computer starts. Contact the SIS administrator if SIS is not running in the system tray or a startup
icon is not available on the desktop. The information below is after SIS DVD has been started.
SIS DVD starts by single clicking the SIS icon in the system tray. Select Service Information System

SIS – Where Do I Start?
SIS has multiple search methods to find parts & service information. The Main
Menu divides the search methods with Product ID required search methods and
Product ID not required search methods. The product ID required searches
produce results that are specific to a product.
A prefix without a serial number can be entered and the search results will apply
to the entire model with that prefix. A prefix only search permits a SIS user to
find information when the exact product ID is not know. The Select Equipment
Model search will provide a model prefix and the use of the Product ID required
searches. Entering a prefix and serial number will produce search results specific
to that product.
SIS search methods can also be divided into parts only searches, parts & service
information search, specific or specialized searches and Service Software
searches.
The introduction that follows, starts with an introduction to the parts
identification screen and also divides the multiple search methods into the four
categories mentioned in the previous paragraph. Most search methods use the
part name or number to find parts and service information related to the part.
This will become more clear as a user gains familiarity with SIS.
SIS – Where Do I Start?
SIS also has links to other searches, screens and information located within
the various search result screens.
Examples of these links are Related Information, View Latest Kits
Information, Parts List and the GoTo menu.
GoTo menus permit navigation to previously viewed screens, temporary
user preferences, feedback and help.
The Parts Identification document (Parts Manual) within the Document
Structure search provides a parts Index that lists the arrangements, parts
groups and assemblies in alphabetical order. All listings in the information
available column provide a link to the parts identification screen (graphic
and consist) for that part number. The parts identification screen is one of
the most common screens viewed in SIS.
Below the Parts Index is a Maintenance Index which provides fast moving
parts and maintenance parts.

Should I Enter a Complete Serial Number?

A complete Product ID should be entered if there are numerous arrangements

associated with a prefix. A 3406 E truck engine is a good example. Enter the prefix
5EK in the product ID. Numerous arrangements are associated with this product
prefix. Enter 5EK1200 and the result is one arrangement.
Machines are a good example of when only the prefix can be entered. Enter the prefix
6NM for a 120 motor-grader. The combined engine and machine arrangements results
are approximately ten. All attachments are displayed when only a prefix is entered. All
attachments are not displayed when a complete product ID is entered.
SIS 2007B was enhanced to allow entering a complete product ID and also have the
option to view all attachments.

Parts Search Basics
The explanations that follow are brief introductions to each search method. The
explanations should help the new SIS user become familiar with the various parts
specific search methods.
Part Keyword or Part Number provides the quickest methods to find a part number
and add the part number to the parts list. Basic information or exact information about the
desired part is required in order to find the correct part number. Search results produce
parts information only and the parts identification screen is displayed after the part
number is selected from the search results.

Parts Search Basics
Similar Parts Search provides two methods for locating similar parts
information. The first method allows the user to drill down through a keyword tree.
As the user drills down through the keyword tree, the list of parts specific to the
keyword progressively narrows. The second method allows the user to locate
similar parts information through a global search by specifying either a part
number or typing in a keyword. Refer to the training document titled,
SISSimilarPartsSearch.ppt for complete search results information.

NPR (Numerical Parts Record) is a system that contains part number
related information for all Caterpillar products and you must be given access to
this feature. This system is primarily used to obtain the most current part number
information for ordering replacement inventory and repair parts. Agreement must
be signed to use this search.
