1. As the chairperson of a meeting, write what you would say to:


 open and start the meeting by presenting the subject for discussion at the
meeting
 summarize the main facts (background)
 State the objectives clearly.
Use the following pieces of information for this exercise.
Background
10 experienced workers, who have been working for your company for 10 years, are on strike.
You do not know why. The problem is the risk of not meeting the delivery deadlines of your
main customers’ orders.
Objectives of the meeting:
- Why are they on strike?
- What solutions?
Resolution

Well, ladies and gentlemen, I think it’s about time we got started. The situation now is that 10
experienced workers of the company are on strike and the risk is that we may not meet the
delivery deadlines of our main customers ‘orders.

We are here to consider first why they are on strike, secondly to get some suggestions and
finally to decide what to do.

2. Write what you would say in the following situations as a chairperson


a) Peter knows very well the problem, ask his opinion.
 What do you think of that Peter?

b) John is interrupting Mike during his explanation. Deal with that interruption.
 Order please. Address your opinion to the chairman.
c) You want to move on to the next item.
 Let’s move onto the next item.
d) You invite people to deal with voting.
 Let’s put it to the vote then.
e) Someone has been speaking for a long time. It is getting late. Speed up the meeting.
 We’re running short on time, so let’s move on.
f) There is no other business, bring the meeting to an end
 If no one has anything else to add, I think we can end the meeting at this point.
