Question 1: (6 marks)

Many patients get concerned when a test involves injection of a radioactive material.
It, however, takes about 24 hours for the radiation levels to reach what we are
exposed to in day-to-day activities. Given below is the relative intensity of
radiation t  as a function of time.

t (hours) 0 1 3 5 7 9
t  1.000 0.891 0.708 0.562 0.447 0.355

a) Use non-linear (exponential) regression to fit the points to a function of the

form t =C e Dt [5 marks]
b) Approximate the relative intensity after 24 hours [1 mark]

Question 2: (6 marks)

Consider the following integral:

2
2.9 x
1 −
∫  2π
e 2
dx
−2.15
a) use Simpson’s 1/3 Rule to approximate the integral. [4 marks]
b) Use the exact value as 0.98236 to find the relative error. [1 mark]
c) Suggest a way to decrease the relative error [1 mark]
