Fluid Friction in Pipes

Objectives:

1. To investigate the head loss in a pipe.

2. To compare experimental results with theoretical ones.

Background Theory
When a fluid flows in a pipe it experiences a certain
amount of loss of its energy. This
loss is usually expressed as head loss (hL). Experiments
have shown that
 For laminar flow in pipes the head loss is proportional
to the mean velocity in the pipe
 While in turbulent flow the head loss is proportional
to the nth power of the mean velocity

Calculations

How to calculate ( Q ) ?
- We record the collected volume of water and measuring
time in the appropriate columns and obtain the volumetric
flow rate ( Q ) .

How to calculate the pressure ?

- We can calculate the pressure from the pressure gauge .

How to calculate the Velocity ( V ) ?

- We can calculate the Velocity ( V ) from ( V = Q / A ) .
