CVG4143 Steel Design Project

The shown three storey portal frame is fixed at bases a and b and subject to the shown factored gravity
horizontal loads. All members are connected through moment resisting connections.
The frame is restrained in the z direction at joints a-h through a bracing system normal to the plane of
the frame (not shown). In between the joints, all members are free to move in the z direction and twist.
It is required to design the frame subject to the following constraints
a) Maximum Deflections in all beams due to specified live loads (acting alone) shall not exceed the
span/360. Assume specified vertical live loads =40% of those given in the figure.
b) Use the same cross-section for columns aceg and bdfh
c) Use the same cross-section for beams cd and ef
d) Maximum inter-storey drift shall not exceed the 2% of the storey height.
e) Design shall conform to CAN/CSA S16-09 requirements
f) For proper connection detailing, beam flanges cannot exceed those of column flanges.

For initial proportioning, assume all members to have W200x46 cross-sections

Using a computer program,

a) Draw the vertical deflection diagram under specified live loads due to gravity alone and
determine the maximum deflection
b) Draw the lateral displacement diagram under horizontal forces and determine the maximum
understory drift
c) Determine whether the deflection and inter-storey drift requirements are met. If not, take the
appropriate measures to rectify them and redo items (a) and/or (b) as needed.
d) Draw the normal (axial) force, shearing force, and bending moment diagrams based on a first
order analysis under the shown factored loads
e) Obtain the internal the forces at the corner points based on second order (P-delta analysis)
under the shown factored load
f) Using the approximate P-Delta method taught in Class, obtain the factored moments at the
frame corner and compare your results to those obtained in (e). Comment on the differences.
g) Using the knowledge you acquired in the course, conduct an economic design for the frame.
