Conclusions

The creation of landfill typically means destroying natural habitats for wildlife. In
Tagbobolo, City of Mati, as much as 700 hectares of habitat have been lost. Long ago,
this landfill was once an open dumpsite, there is no barrier between wastes and soil.
The leachate directly penetrates the surrounding environment. It passes through soil
and enter the surface water or groundwater which causes soil pollution and water
contamination. The waste that is being disposed onto surface were just covered by soil
until now. Therefore, there is some part of a land that are still polluted and may continue
for several years if actions are not taken. In contrast, it became now a sanitary landfill,
which have an engineered facility and collecting leachate systems and they are covered
by a soil layer after each day of operation, all of these improvements minimize the
negative impact of the landfills on their surrounding environment.
