Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study was conducted to examine the effect of α-lipoic acid (ALA) on sodium
valproate-induced liver injury observed by histological feature of the liver tissue of mice.
Materials and Methods: Mice were divided into three groups: (1) vehicle group, (2) sodium valproate
group, (3) sodium valproate-ALA group. Vehicle group was injected with saline i.p. for 28 days. Sodium
valproate group was injected with sodium valproate 300 mg/kg i.p. daily for 14 days, then proceed with
vehicle every day until day 28. The sodium valproate-ALA group was injected with sodium valproate 300
mg/kg daily for 14 days prior to the intraperitoneal administration of ALA 100 mg/kg until day 28. Mice
were sacrificed and the liver was extracted for histopathological examination.
Results: Histopathological examination of the liver section of vehicle group showed the normal structure
of liver. Two weeks after the administration of sodium valproate, histopathological examination showed
an abnormal structure of liver, which contains necrosis appearance and inflammatory cells. Treatment
with ALA after the induction of sodium valproate notably ameliorated the hepatic histopathological
lesions and performed a similar structure to the normal liver.
Conclusion: ALA ameliorates sodium valproate-induced liver injury in mice.
