185 PTFE Tape

In a Alfa-Laval Heat Exchanger
INDUSTRY
Chemical Processing (Mfg. Manganese Dioxide for battery production)

EQUIPMENT
Alfa-Laval Heat Exchangers for water heating. Each Heat Exchanger
has 32 plates & between the plates there is a complicated rubber
gasket that seals the fluid that runs through these plates.

SERVICE
Water Heating
PROBLEM
Frequent changes of these gaskets due to heat cracks; changing
approximately every 3 months.

SOLUTION
Installed 2 runs of 185 PTFE Tape 1/4" thick one on top of the other
into the grooves (it was determined at installation that the clearances
were such that one run of 1/4" was not enough)
PERFORMANCE
The first heat exchanger was changed to 185 tape on March 1995 and
twenty months later continues to run without leakage. In March of
1997, the customer plans to open the heat exchanger to change the
tape since they have a two year maintenance schedule.

RESULTS -
All Heat Exchangers, 20 Total, were converted to the 185 solution; Savings for each Heat
Exchanger for the past twenty months has been in $6,705 in material costs alone - $134,100 per
year.
