1 Introduction
1.1 Terminology
Adjustment = recalibration of the average opacity value detected by the smoke detector. The
adjustment serves as a corrective action of the detection against the progressive accumulation
of dirt inside the smoke analysis chamber.
Control module = interconnecting device on the detection line which is controlled by the
Control Panel in the event of fault/Alarm by activating some outputs.
Degraded = when on, it allows the manual call point to increase the Alarm level by one unit,
instead of two (normal condition).
Drift = This is a function allowing the detection of an Alarm before it is detected by a single
device; at least 2 devices must both reach half of the Alarm threshold of each single detector.
Double knock = when the Control Panel is in stand-by condition and detects a detector in
Alarm, it activates ALARM 1 condition. When the Control Panel is in ALARM 1 condition and
detects a further detector in Alarm, it switches to ALARM 2 condition. When it detects the next
detectors in Alarm, the Control Panel forces the ALARM 3 condition.
Double knock with time = when the Control Panel, in stand-by condition, detects one or more
detectors in Alarm, this function activates ALARM 1 condition and the intervention time. Once
this time has elapsed and if only one detector in Alarm has been detected, the Control Panel will
force ALARM 2 condition; when more detectors go into Alarm, the Control Panel forces ALARM
3 condition. In the case of other detectors switching to Alarm, ALARM 3 condition is always
forced.
Double knock with reset = when the Control Panel, in stand-by condition, detects a detector in
Alarm, it switches to Zone ALARM 1 condition and activates the reset timer with the preset time.
When the Control Panel detects a further detector in Alarm, it switches to Zone ALARM 2
condition. When it detects the next detectors in Alarm, the Control Panel forces the Zone
ALARM 3 condition. After the set time has elapsed, the Control Panel cancels the Zone Alarm
condition. This mode can only be applied to Technological Zones.
Detector = an automatic device that has a sensor able to respond to a physical stimulus, such
as smoke, heat or both.
Device = any component connected to the detection lines able to transmit or receive
information about the monitored area.
Evacuation (Master Alarm) = this function allows the programmed control modules to be
activated on:
- MASTER ALARM key pressure.
- Manual call points (programmed for this function) activation.
- Zone ALARM 2 condition.

PROGRAMMING MANUAL IS7080-AB
Detector group = abstract entity allowing the grouping together of detectors, manual call points
and input interfaces existing on the detection lines, belonging to different or identical zones. It is
useful to originate a top level control providing more flexibility when a cross-check is required.
Zone group = abstract entity allowing the grouping together of the zones, in order to originate a
top level control providing more flexibility when a cross-check is required.
Field fault = trouble occurred on the detection field (e.g. detectors, detection lines, etc.).
System fault = hardware trouble of the Control Panel or the peripherals connected to it.
Loop type line = currently indicates a Class A detection circuit; both circuit cable terminations
are connected to the CIE terminal block.
Open type line = currently indicates a Class B detection circuit; only one circuit cable
termination is connected to the CIE terminal block.
Detection lines = physical connections linking the devices to the Control Panel.
Night/Day = function allowing an automatic increase in the sensitivity of the detectors during the
night.
Manual Call Point = manual device available to the user allowing to manually force an Alarm
condition; when active, the CIE enters ALARM 2 condition.
Point = Component connected to the detection circuit which is able to transmit or receive
information concerning fire detection.
Single knock = when the Control Panel, in stand-by condition, detects a detector in Alarm, it
activates ALARM 2 condition. When the Control Panel, in ALARM 2 condition still detects one or
more detectors in Alarm, it activates ALARM 3 condition. The switching of other detectors to the
Alarm always forces ALARM 3 condition.
Single knock with time = when the Control Panel, in stand-by condition, detects one or more
detectors in Alarm, it activates the intervention time. During the intervention time, the Control
Panel signals the condition of “future” Alarm by activating the buzzer (ALARM 0 condition).
Once the above time has elapsed, and if only one detector in Alarm has been detected, the
Control Panel will force ALARM 2 condition; in the event that more detectors in Alarm are
detected, the Control Panel will force ALARM 3 condition. As other detectors go into Alarm,
ALARM 3 condition is always forced.
ALARM 1 only = when the Control Panel, in stand-by condition, detects one or more detectors
in Alarm, it activates ALARM 1 condition. As other detectors go into Alarm, ALARM 1 condition
is always forced.
Zone = geographical subdivision of the monitored rooms and environments where one or more
points are installed and for which a zone signal, common to the various points, is provided.

Fire Zone= if an Alarm condition occurs, all the control modules, the siren and bell outputs, the
Alarm relays and the indicators will be activated depending on the current Alarm level of the
Control Panel.
Extinguish Zone = when an Alarm condition occurs, all the control modules, the siren and bell
outputs, the Alarm relays and the indicators are activated depending on the current Alarm level
of the Control Panel.
If the Alarm is generated by pressing the MASTER ALARM key located on the Control Panel
keyboard, or using the Master Alarm function, the control modules associated with the zone in
question will not be activated.
Technological Zone = when an Alarm condition occurs, all the control modules are activated
depending on the current Alarm level of the Control Panel. The outputs of the self-powered
siren and of the external bells are never activated.
To make the most of Area 54, all the “basic concepts” should be well known to the installer
and to the operator of the Control Panel. A fire protection system normally consists of a series of
physical elements (such as detectors, manual call points, control modules, detection lines, etc.) and of
some abstract elements (i.e. zones, detector groups, zone groups) generating a complex monitoring
and supervising system if properly sized and programmed. It is thus necessary to analyze each single
element in order to understand and use Area 54.
These are devices installed on the detection lines serving as detection appliances for
the detectors and the manual call points and as activation modules for the control modules.
Generally, when the Control Panel is in the “field scan” phase of the normal operation, the
detectors constantly monitor any Alarm condition (smoke presence due to fire, gas, temperature
rising). In an Alarm condition, the detector or the manual call point (if pressed) will send
information to the Control Panel through the detection line to which it is connected in order to
process the received data. Once this procedure is accomplished, the Control Panel, in the case
of an Alarm, controls the outputs associated with the Alarm condition and the control modules
located on the detection lines. The control modules will, in turn, activate other devices for the
management and/or the signalling of the Alarm condition (warning plates, sirens, etc.). The
following devices can be connected to the detection lines of Area 54:
Every device existing on the line has three very important features to allow its
identification by Area 54. These features are: the device type in numeric format, the number of
the detection line to which the device is connected and the device address.
In Area 54 each detection line can include up to 128 devices regardless of their type.
Every device in the detection line must have a unique address code so that it can be properly
identified. Area 54 permits to associate each detector, manual call point or control module with a
32-chrs wording allowing an immediate identification.
Signalling Line Circuits are the physical and power connections between the detectors
and the Control Panel. The number of circuits is related to the Control Panel configuration and
they may be Class A (loop type) or Class B (open type) circuits. In the case of Loop, the cable
that the devices are connected to returns to the Control Panel, while in open circuits the cable
does not return to the panel and connection is terminated. The system configuration,
differentiated by Class A or Class B circuits, is defined by the programmer when the installation
is being wired. The Area 54 Control Panel is equipped with MR128 line modules that act as
interfaces between the Detection Line Circuits and the Control Panel itself. These intelligent
modules communicate with the devices connected to the Detection Line Circuit and transmit all
Alarms and troubles to the Control Panel for processing. It must be pointed out that these
modules are independent and able to operate even without supervision from the Control Panel.
In case of a Class B circuit configuration, each single circuit module has two branches (A and
B). Referring to the device identification address, it is important to underline that no differences
will be put into place when using the two branches of the MR128 interface as two open circuits
(instead of Loop). An address can be assigned to branch A or to branch B with the only
restriction that it will be unique.
1.5 Zone
From the programming point of view, a Zone is a logical grouping that allows the
grouping of detectors on the detection circuit. There are no physical limits concerning the
association between detectors and Zones: detectors from different circuits may belong to the
same Zone. In Area 54, each detector belongs to a specific Zone and cannot be shared among
other Zones. This ensures the absence of limits concerning the number of devices that can be
associated with a particular Zone, thus all the detectors installed on the different circuits can be
allocated to a single Zone. Each Zone can be associated with up to 4 Output modules (type 3);
all of them will be activated when an Alarm occurs in that particular Zone. There are no
restrictions concerning the activation of the various modules: each one is independent and it
may be installed on any circuit and controlled by other Zones, detector or Zone Groups.
Area 54 allows a high number of Zones depending on the Control Panel configuration:
Each Zone can be configured in a specific type of operation (such as Fire Zone,
Technology Zone or Control Zone) according to the user’s requirements. In addition to this
feature, the Zone can enter the Alarm condition or a condition different than the stand-by one,
according to the set operation mode: single or double knock, with or without timer or only
“ALARM 1”. Each zone can be authorized to use the Z.EL.AL., Day/Night or Evacuation
functions.
The Z.EL.AL. (Zone Elaborated Alarm) function allows the panel to enter the Alarm
condition without a real Alarm if initiated by a field device; it is required that at least 2 detectors
reach half the value of the Alarm threshold.
The Day/Night function allows the sensitivity of the detectors to automatically increase
during the night period.
The Evacuation function enables the Zone for a general Evacuation. This function will
be initiated by an automatic event, either by pressing the MASTER ALARM key, or the specific
manual call point.
A 32-chrs wording can be associated with each Zone.
This logical grouping allows the detectors connected to one or more Detection Line
Circuits, and belonging to the same or different Zones, to be grouped together permitting a
higher level control in terms of flexibility if a cross check is required. Area 54 allows a large
number of groups, depending on the Control Panel configuration:
This logical grouping allows the different Zones to be grouped together permitting a
higher level control in terms of flexibility if a cross check is required. Area 54 allows a large
number of Zone Groups, depending on the Control Panel configuration:
Fire Alarm: when an Alarm condition occurs, all the control modules, the siren and bell outputs,
the Alarm relays and the indicators are activated depending on the current Alarm level of the
Control Panel.
The abbreviation for the Fire Alarm type is FR.
Technological: when an Alarm condition occurs, all the control modules are activated depending
on the current Alarm level of the Control Panel. The outputs of the self-powered sirens and of
the external bells are never activated.
The abbreviation for the Technological type is TN.
Extinguish: (only for the Zones) when an Alarm condition occurs, all the control modules, the
Alarm relays and the indicators are activated depending on the current Alarm level of the
Control Panel. If the Alarm is generated by means of the MASTER ALARM key, located on the
Control Panel keyboard, or through the Master Alarm function, the control modules associated
with Zone in question are not activated.
The abbreviation for the Extinguish type is EX.
Each Zone, detector or Zone Group can be programmed to switch to the Alarm
condition according to the user’s needs. Area 54 is able to manage 3 Alarm levels: Pre-Alarm or
ALARM 1, ALARM 2 and ALARM 3. The switching to an upper Alarm condition is always due to
the acknowledgement of a detector that has passed into the Alarm condition, or when a
specified time has elapsed (i.e. mode with time). Each Alarm condition involves the activation of
the buzzer and of the corresponding indicator and Alarm relay, including the lower level ones.
Every single detector in Alarm generally involves the change of one Alarm level; this behaviour
is not related to the manual call points, which result in a change of two Alarm levels, or to the
multiple threshold detectors (up to 3 thresholds, for instance gas), for which every single
threshold involves an individual change of the Alarm level.

Single knock: when the Control Panel, in stand-by condition, detects a detector in Alarm, it
activates ALARM 2 condition. When the Control Panel, in ALARM 2 condition still detects one or
more detectors in Alarm, it activates ALARM 3 condition. The switching of other detectors to the
Alarm always forces ALARM 3 condition.
Single knock with time: when the Control Panel, in stand-by condition, detects one or more
detectors in Alarm, it activates the intervention time. During the intervention time, the Control
Panel signals the condition of “future” Alarm by activating the buzzer. Once the above time has
elapsed, and if only one detector in Alarm has been detected, the Control Panel will force
ALARM 2 condition; in the event that more detectors in Alarm are detected, the Control Panel
will force ALARM 3 condition. As other detectors go into Alarm, ALARM 3 condition is always
forced
Double knock: when the Control Panel is in stand-by condition and detects a detector in Alarm,
it activates ALARM 1 condition. When the Control Panel is in ALARM 1 condition and detects a
next detector in Alarm, it switches to ALARM 2 condition. When it detects the next detector in
Alarm, the Control Panel forces the ALARM 3 condition.
Double knock with time: when the Control Panel, in stand-by condition, detects one or more
detectors in Alarm, this function activates ALARM 1 condition and the intervention time. Once
this time has elapsed and if only one detector in Alarm has been detected, the Control Panel will
force ALARM 2 condition; when more detectors go into Alarm, the Control Panel forces ALARM
3 condition. In the case of other detectors switching to Alarm, ALARM 3 condition is always
forced.
ALARM 1 only: when the Control Panel, in stand-by condition, detects one or more detectors in
Alarm, it activates ALARM 1 condition. As other detectors go into Alarm, ALARM 1 condition is
always forced.
Double knock with reset: when the Control Panel, in stand-by condition, detects a detector in
Alarm, it switches to Zone ALARM 1 condition and activates the reset timer with the preset time.
When the Control Panel detects a next detector in Alarm, it switches to Zone ALARM 2
condition. When it detects the next detectors in Alarm, the Control Panel forces the Zone
ALARM 3 condition. After the set time has elapsed, the Control Panel cancels the Zone Alarm
condition. This mode can only be applied to Technological Zones.
When power is applied the Normal (Stand-by) operative way is automatically entered
and remains thus until an operation performed by either the installer or the operator.
When the Control Panel is in Normal (Stand-by) operative way, it monitors all the
connected detectors and manages all events that could occur in the field or directly in the
control panel. These events can be described as: Alarm, system fault, filed fault, maintenance
and exclusions.
Generally, in Normal operation, when there are no active events, the display shows the
information below:
* #
FIRE PROTECTION PLANT
12/10/00 11:50
AREA 54/16
Control Unit ID
Date Time
If the control panel has not been programmed, the message “unable to monitor” will
appear on the display.
If the Control Panel has not yet stored any event, the Event counter shows an * (in the
top right corner) that will change into a “#”, as soon as an event has occurred and will remain so
until a level 3 password is inserted or the programming is initialised.

When the condition of the control panel changes due to an event, the event itself will be
shown on the display and all the cumulative counters for each type of event will appear on the
right hand side of the display.
If more events occur in addition to the event counter increment, the display will show
the first event at the top and the most recent event at the bottom. The event display has the
following priority:
To change the event viewing, press the < and > keys and move the selection asterisk
onto the desired event. To check the event list for the selected event, press the arrow keys ∧
and ∨ in order to view the event; the most recent event will be shown at the top.
The Alarm display depends on the generating source and the Zone programming type.
In general, there are 4 Alarm indications:
ALARM 0: the detector has activated the Zone/Group and it hasn’t passed to an effective Alarm
stage yet. Only when the time associated with it has elapsed, the Zone/Group will switch to a
condition of Alarm or Group. This indication is displayed with the single knock with time.
ALARM 1: this Alarm condition can be applied to the double knock modes (with/without time) or
“ALARM 1 only” requiring to use such indication.
ALARMS 2, 3: these Alarm conditions can be applied to all the operating modes related to the
Zones, except for the “ALARM 1 only” mode, and they can be the result of cumulative Alarm
conditions leading the Alarm to its maximum level (level 3).

The system fault display allows the immediate recognition of the device and of a part of
the Control Panel which is in a failure condition and can negatively affect the system operation.
In any case, each event is described on the display and it is complete with all the device
identification data (e.g. the address) and the relevant error code.

PROGRAMMING MANUAL IS7080-AB
The field fault display depends on the generating source. A field fault usually affects
either a device connected to the detection line, or the detection line itself. In the first case, a
field fault due to a device is signalled as follows:
Priority
Detector type
It’s easy to understand how the field fault of a device is due to the inability of the
Control Panel to detect the said device, since it is faulty or has been removed.
In the second case, the field fault is due to the detection line when a particular event
has modified the connection structure of the said line, i.e. the line loop breaking in two branches
named A and B, or a short-circuit of the line. If so, the display will show the following message:
Faulty line number
Priority
Detector type
During the Normal (Stand-by) Operative Way, it is possible to know the status of the active
exclusions related to the devices connected to the Control Panel, to the abstract entities (i.e.
Zones, Groups), or to the various devices and the detection lines.

This display is employed only if a “control unit network” exists and when the MASTER
panel supervises and controls the same network.
If a SLAVE panel detects an event, the MASTER panel will notify it showing the event

SLAVE panel number and name.
The event types which may be displayed are as follows:
• Alarm
• System fault
• Field fault

The AREA54-8, AREA54-16 and AREA54-32 models allow two user messages, each
consisting of 4 lines. In general, when these texts are not present, the logo is shown at
the display bottom.
If there is at least one text, the above logo is not displayed and the user text indicating
the stand-by status of the Control Panel appears in its place, or, in the event of an Alarm/fault,
the user text warning that the Control Panel is in such condition. The user text can be
programmed using SOFT 54 only.
When an Alarm, Fault or Maintenance event occurs, the Control Panel performs not
only all the functions and programming related to the above event (i.e. control module enabling,
relay activation, etc.), but also displays such event by activating the internal buzzer continuously
for the Alarm and intermittently for Faults and Maintenance.
In such a condition, the user or the operator presses the ACKNOWLEDGE key to
silence the buzzer and in turn automatically runs the operation called “event acknowledgment”.
It is assumed that the user is managing this trouble condition (eventual field tests), however the
Control Panel remains in the Alarm or Fault condition keeping its outputs active.
Once an event has been acknowledged, and the user has dealt with the causes that
initiated the event, the operator can easily stop the Alarm of Fault condition by pressing the
RESET EVENT button (after entering the password code if required).
In this case, the Control Panel resets the system to Normal condition: all Alarms and
troubles are cancelled and all the controlled outputs and relays return to the normal mode.
At the end of this procedure, the Control Panel returns to Normal operation. If the event
that caused the Alarm persists, the Control Panel will enter into the Alarm status.
Each Global Reset command given from the Control Panel will be stored in the non-
volatile memory.
1.10.2 Programming
In this operative way, the Control Panel can be programmed by the user/installer.
During the programming operation, the Control Panel usually verifies that the field and the
detection lines are off.

PROGRAMMING MANUAL IS7080-AB
Area 54 is a fully modular Control Panel especially designed for fire detection that
allows all the field needs to be satisfied, as well as permitting future system extensions. To meet
all these requirements, Area 54 is internally composed of different modules that can be “added”
or “removed”. The modules composing Area 54 are listed below specifying the functions they
perform:
AREA54 CPU Card: This is the acknowledgment, process and command unit of all the functions
of Area 54. Both the electronic interfaces towards the field, complete with short-circuit isolators,
and all the electronic equipment, as well as the microprocessors for elaborating the various
signals and activating the commands, such as relays and signalling outputs, are actually located
on this card. In addition to the connection to the viewing LED module with display, the card can
be easily connected to optional communication modules allowing the Control Panel
configuration to be enlarged.
MR128 Line Module: This is the module allowing the actual interfacing between the detection
line and the CPU card. The MR128 is a stand-alone module which is internally managed by an
8 bit microprocessor. This module scans the devices connected to its detection line and notifies
the Control Panel of any Alarm or Fault condition. This module is integrated on AREA54 CPU
card on AREA54-1 control panel.
MC8 Line status display module: this module allows the status display of 8 detection lines
through led indicators. The MC8 is a stand-alone module which is internally managed by an 8
bit microprocessor. In case the CPU board is out of service, the MC8 module is able to control
the 8 associated line modules independently.
AREA54 Power supplier: This module ensures the proper power supply of the system. The
power supplier also includes all the controls for the management and the recharging of the
Control Panel battery.
Display: This module allows all the information processed by the CPU card to be viewed.
Depending on the Control Panel type, this display can contain 40 characters for 4 rows, or 40
characters for 16 rows.
AREA54 Terminal block module: This module features all the terminals for the service
connections (remote panels, serial communication, Alarm outputs…), as well as all the signal
relays. This module is integrated on AREA54 CPU card on AREA54-1 control panel.
SONG54 External bell control module: This module enables the connection of a controlled
external bell.
MSP54 Printer module: this optional module enables the connection of a centronics tractor-fed
parallel printer supporting the ASCII standard.
MMS54 Module: This optional module enables the connection of a modem and synoptic panels
allowing the construction of a network of MASTER / SLAVE panels
Page 24 / 128
AREA 54 DS80SC19-005
16 Bit multiprocessor modular analogue control panel
LBT80264
PROGRAMMING MANUAL IS7080-AB
MCS54 Module: This optional module, only for AREA54-1, enables the connection of a modem,
remote panels and allowing the construction of a network of MASTER / SLAVE panels.
The Area 54 modularity ensures the complete control of the detection field also in the
event of CPU board failure. In this case, thanks to the built-in control intelligence of the line
modules, the scanning phases are always possible even when they are not controlled by the
CPU card. This means that when the CPU board is faulty, or when an Alarm occurs, the Control
Panel will enter the Alarm condition through the ALARM 1 and the ALARM 2 relays, as well as
the ALARM 1 indicator,.
If the configuration of the control panel involves one or more MC8 modules, it is able to
signal the line upon which the Alarm is present, or whether a field/system fault has occurred. In
such case, each MC8 module will support its line modules taking control of them as if they were
managed by the Control Panel itself. However, it should be considered that this particular
situation must not replace the normal operation of the Control Panel, but that it is an emergency
operation. Also, note that all the Zone/Group associations of the various devices are no longer
valid: each module signals the Alarm condition when a detector located on its line detects an
Alarm condition.
This function is not implemented in AREA54-1.
Alarm 1,2,3 When on, these indicators signal the condition and the Alarm level of the
Control Panel. This level is always cumulative. The maximum Alarm
level is level 3.
The ALARM 1 indicator is activated even when the CPU card is faulty
and when any Alarm is present on the field.
Fault When on, it indicates that the Control Panel has detected a fault. This is
the fault cumulative indicator.

according the position of its jumper.
(3)
Function not implemented on AREA54-1 panel.
1.13.5 Jumpers
The JP10 and JP11 jumpers are present on the AREA54 CPU card; refer to the installation
manual. On Area51-1 panel, the jumpers are identified by respectively JP7 and JP8.
A Zone test can be performed for the control of the proper associations of the detectors
and of the programming related to the Zone itself.
In Normal (Stand-by) operative way and in a non active event condition, press the
TEST SYSTEM key and enter the password (if programmed) to enable the test. Enter the Zone
to be checked, then confirm by pressing the ACKNOWLEDGE key.
Thereafter, the operator will be asked whether to enable the Alarm relays or not:
At this point, the Test System indicator lights up to signify that the Zone Test is active;
when a detector is forced into the Alarm condition, the Zone will enter the ALARM 3 condition
monitoring the associated detectors for about 10 seconds. Thereafter, it will automatically return
to the normal operation cancelling the above Alarm condition. During the test phase, any Alarm
conditions from Zones or Groups will normally be managed as actual Alarm conditions which
are not subject to the timing of the Zone in test. The “Global Reset” and the silencing of the
Zone in test will have the following result: the test will always remain active, but the status and
the actuation of the Zone will be taken to the normal condition.
When the Zone Test is enabled, it is necessary to consider the conformation of the
various associations in the case of detectors and control modules being shared between Zones,
detector and Zone Groups. The Control Panel performs the Zone test, but it also manages the
associations which are indirectly related to the Zone or the device involved.
1.15 Modem
It is possible to connect an analogue modem to Area 54, via the MMS 54 optional
module, in order to transfer data on a switched telephone network for the remote control of
events and the Control Panel.
The modem can be configured using one of the following operating modes:
• ANSWER: the modem accepts the incoming calls and connects to a remote modem.
• ANSWER/ORIGINATE: the modem accepts the incoming calls and connects to a remote
modem. In case of an event, the modem generates one or more calls to the phone numbers
that have been programmed and associated to the various events.
• ORIGINATE: in case of an event, the modem generates one or more calls to the telephone
numbers that have been programmed and associated to the various events. THE MODEM
DOES NOT RESPOND TO INCOMING CALLS.
Area 54 allows the storage of 4 telephone numbers consisting of 20 digits each, that will
selected in case of one or more events associated to them. Each telephone number can
actually be associated with the type or the types of events for the call activation; these events
can be defined as Alarm, system fault, field fault and maintenance.
Area 54 can store 3 AT commands that are sent to the modem in the following stages
for increased flexibility of use:
Refer to the manuals of the MMS54 module and the modem for information on its
connections and characteristics.
For proper system operation, do not use modems other than those recommended by
ELKRON S.p.A. ELKRON S.p.A. does not guarantee proper system operation if modems other
than those recommended are used.
The panels are connected using two-wire RS485 at 9600 byte on an MMS54 module.
In a central unit network, a modem can be used for the remote monitoring and control of the events; in
this case, the modem must be connected and managed by the master panel. The events from the slave
panels can be remotely monitored via modem on the master panel during programming.
The Area 54 Control Panel ensures a double programmability from personal computer
in combination with the SOFT54 software tool which operates under Windows®. SOFT54 allows
a fully offline programming, such as download and upload operations.
By transferring the configuration from the control panel to the computer, the installer
can store in the computer memory the final system configuration after having completed the
programming, the start-up and the readjustment of the system features. The copy of the
configuration, saved on the PC, will serve as a “reserve” or “backup” to restore the configuration
in case of incorrect programming.
For more information on the SOFT54 tool, refer to the relevant user manual.
After having properly installed all the components of the Fire Alarm System (in
compliance with the job drawing and the Installation Instructions), the installer will have to select
the Control Panel programming mode (i.e. “manual” or from ”personal computer) depending on
the requirements. It is recommended to have previously developed the system analysis, using
the schematic structural tables included with this manual, before proceeding to the effective
programming.
Before starting the programming, verify that the jumper has been set.

PROGRAMMING MANUAL IS7080-AB
Once the Control Panel has been powered and after having verified that there are no
electrical troubles, enable the programming mode and follow the points described below:
1 Proceed to the automatic start-up of the lines or, alternatively, use the manual mode when
it is necessary to manually insert each single point per line,
At the end of this operation, the automatic line start-up procedure is strongly
recommended since the Control Panel shows the effectively detected field and the
existing devices. Once completed, the installer should modify any incorrect data and
repeat the above procedure until the desired configuration has been obtained.
2 Program the Zone/Group parameters (name, Zone/Group type, operative mode, etc) and
the type of the connected devices (detectors, manual call points, modules).
3 Program the parameters for each device, according to the job drawings.
4 Enable the peripherals connected to the Control Panel (printer, remote panels…).
5 Exit the programming and activate the Normal (Stand-by) operative way.
6 Check the system functionality: the installer should verify the proper associations between
the devices and the actuations in the event of an Alarm.
7 Save the obtained configuration to personal computer using the SOFT54 tool.
After having edited the configuration on personal computer, power the Control Panel
and enable the configuration download option of the SOFT54 tool. After this, the Control Panel
will switch to the Normal (Stand-by) operative way: any discrepancies between the set
configuration and the actual field will be immediately highlighted by incorrect field/system faults
or false Alarm conditions. In such a case, switch the panel to the Programming mode and rectify
the Control Panel configuration, if incorrect, or act on the devices on field.
It is recommended to prepare and permanently install the Control Panel and the
relevant devices to avoid any loss of time, then proceed as described:
1 Execute point 1 of manual programming.
2 Exit the programming and switch to Programming mode: if everything is correct, any
field/system faults or Alarms should not occur. If troubles were encountered, remove the
causes which initiate the incorrect events.
3 Upload the configuration to the personal computer using the SOFT54 tool.
4 Shut down the Control Panel.
5 Proceed to the programming on personal computer using the configuration uploaded from
the control unit, integrating it for each device, Zone and Group and effecting all the
desired associations.
6 When the Control Panel is in Normal condition, download the configuration existing on the
personal computer.
7 Check the system functionality: the installer should verify the proper associations between
the devices and the actuations in the event of an Alarm.
8 Save the final configuration, if modified, to the personal computer.

1.28.2.2.7 EVENTS
It is possible to define which events will force the modem to execute a call to the
telephone network in order to reach a management center. The events that can be associated
with each single phone are defined as follows and listed in order of precedence:
• Alarm
• System fault
• Field fault
• Maintenance
Each call is considered successful when the correct password exchange of the modem
occurs after the connection. In the event of an unsuccessful call, it is continuously repeated
according to specific timings until the call ends successfully, or a Global Reset is performed.
The call and the eventual recalls are always made in the following order: if the
connection is impossible (i.e. busy, no answer), the modem is forced to execute 3 attempts to
call, each call 2 minutes apart. If, after 3 attempts, the call does not end successfully, the
call/recall procedure will be repeated every 5 minutes. In case the connection falls at the
connection stage (handshake), the recall is immediate (3 attempts with subsequent delay of 5
minutes). The activation of the function is subordinate to the sending of the ATX4 string for the
on line tone check. Otherwise (i.e. a default), the “no carrier” message will be displayed.
If more events occurred on the same phone number, the system will make as many calls as
events, provided the operator does not send an “on-line” Global Reset command.

Area 54 can create a network where a single MASTER control panel manages up to 32
SLAVE control panels. In this condition, each SLAVE operates as stand alone control panel,
and it is monitored by the MASTER. For execute a network, the MMS54 module must be
present on each control panel.
After having defined the MASTER panel, program it using an address greater than 32
and elect the control unit as MASTER. The setting of the MASTER address greater than 32 is
necessary to manage 32 SLAVE panels. Assigning an address between 1 and 32 for the
MASTER panel, results in the loss of an address which can be used for the SLAVE panels.
Refer to the section titled CONTROL PANEL to set the address and the master mode.
At the end of the programming, enable the SLAVE panels that are to be viewed by the

2.1.4 VERIFY
From this menu, it is possible to do a search for the various detectors per level.
This function is particularly useful in the case of programmed maintenance, since it allows the
detectors which are about to undergo maintenance to be verified beforehand. The average reading level
of a cleaned detector in absence of smoke is equal to approx 50-55 points.
Over time, the dirt accumulating inside the detector progressively increases the reading value.
When it detects a level higher than 130 points, the Control Panel warns that there are devices under
maintenance. During maintenance, this function aids the operator in searching for detectors that have
reached levels near to the maintenance level before the Control Panel detects them.
