 Wind Turbine

One of the most wind power applications

is the wind turbine which used as a
machine for converting the kinetic
energy available in the wind into
mechanical energy which is then used to
grinding grain, pumping water and
produce electricity ‘’

 Literature Review

• Many wind turbines researches are focused on

accurately predicting efficiency.
• (CFD) is a useful design tool for wind turbine
analysis and numerically offers a possibility to
reduce the number of experimental tests that are
needed.

Objectives of the Present Study
In the present work,
• CFD was used to investigate the aerodynamic performance
of Vertical Axis Wind Turbine with Two Different Rotors
Having Movable Vanes as shown in the figures below.
Boundary Conditions

• Top view of computational domain and boundary

conditions,
(a) three blades (b) four blades
• Results and Discussion

• The residual plot, which has very small spikes in turbulent kinetic energy
and specific dissipation rate for the residual being set as 10-5

Scaled Residual.
• From figure it is can be observed that the Cd for four
blades design is higher than for three blades design .

Figure 8. Relation between drag coefficient and first blade angular positions
• Maximum static pressure drop for four blades design (2.547E+02 Pa)
is found for blade angular position of 45°
• Minimum (1.81E+02 Pa) when the blade angular position is 0°
• both values being greater than those obtained for three blades design.

Contour of static pressure distribution in and around turbine blade at different angular positions.
• Conclusions

The predicted results show that:

• The drag coefficient (Cd) proportional with turbine frontal area.

• Cd for four blades design is higher than three blades design
indicating that the four blades design is more efficient from three
blades design.
• The maximum static pressure drop for closed vanes rotor turbines
is higher than for open vanes rotor turbine. This indicates that the
negative torque is reduced when vanes are movalbe. This give the
power output from the turbine is higher in the case of movable
vanes.
• The velocity in the region of wind turbine´s rotation was much
larger than that of the upstream air flow.
• The results give good agreement when compared with
experimental published results.
