CHAPTER THREE

METHODOLOGY

Preamble

This chapter describes the method that is used in attaining the stated objectives of the study.

It describes the research design, sources of data, population and sampling technique, the

choice of data collection, the instrument and method of data analysis.

3.1 Research Design

The research design to be used in this research is the survey method. This method of research is

suitable because it allows sample to be selected from the population and used as a representative of

the population. Hence, the known microfinance banks that were registered with Corporate Affairs
Commission were purposively selected and used for this study.

3.2 Population of the Study

The population for the study comprised the clients that are on the list of Nigeria Police

Microfinance Bank Plc. and the five branches of Lapo Microfinance Bank in Akure Metropolis.

The two Microfinance Banks have 22,350 clients.

3.3 Sample and Sample Size

The total number of all the clients (male and female) was 22,350. The number of the female

traders was 16,570. Taro Yamane (1967) formula was used to select the sample size of 391

women traders (however, in order to make provision for questionnaires that may not be

returned, 400 questionnaires were distributed to the traders.

3.4 Sampling Technique

Multistage sampling technique was used for this study. Since the total number of women on the

list of the banks was 16,570, Taro Yamane (1967)’s formula (n = N/1+N(e2) - where: n =

Sample Size, N = Population of the Study, and e = error margin @ 5% (0.05) was used to
select the sample size (391). Taro Yamane (1967)’s formula was used because it was

used in Eneh, Chukwuma and Udu (2018)’s study on salary increase and employee

productivity in cement manufacturing companies in South-South, Nigeria, to select the

sample size from its population of study. The number of the women traders used as

sample size was selected from each bank through random sampling. Since the number of

women in each bank was not equal, the number of respondents from each bank was put

into consideration by using random sampling to select the number of women in each bank

that is proportionate to the population.
