‘Time : Three hours 10. un. ‘ch. DEGREE EXAMINATIONS, APRIL/MAY 2019. Elective - Structural Engineering ST 5014 — DESIGN OF STEEL CONCRETE COMPOSITE STRUCTURES (Regulation 2017) ‘Maximum : 100 marks Use of IS 11384-1985, IS 800-2007, Steel Tables and EC4 is permitted. Data can be suitably assumed if necessary. Answer ALL questions. PART A— (10x 2= 20 marks) ‘What do you understand by proportioning of composite members? Give any two common construction issues faced in stecl-concrete composite structures. When can secondary stresses be omitted n the analysis of composite trusses? List the data required for the preliminary design of a composite truss What do you understand by partial shear interaction? List any two requirements for a good shear connector. What is the limiting span to depth ratio of a simply supported steel-concrete composite box girder’ Show the components of a typical composite box girder with a neat sketch Write short notes on the energy absorption characteristics of a composite structure. With reasons suggest a suitable type of composite column that can be used in a Zone V seismic region. PART B— (5 x 13 = 65 marks) (@) Compare and contrast the design specifications as per IS11384-1985 and EC4 for the design of steel-concrete composite members. Or (b) Elaborate on the advantages of steel-concrete composite construction over conventional forms of construction, 12. @ ) 13. (@) ) 14. (@) ) 15. (a) ) 16. (a) ©) simply supported composite beam 12 m span at a spacing of 3m ol is to carry a constriction load of 1 kN/m®, The slab is 150 mm thick. Using M30 grade concrete and yield stress of steel as 300 MPa, find the number of temporary supports needed during construction. Use ISMB 600 steel beam and density of concrete as 24 kN/m:. Or Design a concrete-filled steel circular column of length 4 m to carry a load of 1200 KN. Use M30 grade concrete, Take f, = 250 MPa. Show that provision of shear connection decreases the deflection by one-fourth in simply supported composite beams subjected to udl. or Discuss in detail with neat sketches the various types of shear connectors, used in composite construction. Give a detailed explanation on the flexure, torsion, warping and distortional behaviour of composite box girders, or Elaborate on the salient aspects involved in the design of steel concrete composite box girders. Discuss the factors to be considered in the design of steel concrete ‘composite members under seismic loads. Or With an example show that composite construction is cost effective compared to conventional RCC construction.
