SCHWEITZER ENGINEERING LABORATORIES, INC. Making Electric Power Safer, More Reliable, and More Economical ® SEL APPLICATION GUIDE COMPLETE TRANSFORMER PROTECTION SCHEMES USING THE SEL-587 AND SEL-501 RELAYS © Unit (Differential) Protection © Breaker Failure Protection © Overcurrent Protection © Backup Protection Low Cost High Reliability ‘Small Size Communications Metering Reporting Breaker Monitoring Flexibility Easy to Apply ‘The SEL-587 Relay, by itself, provides complete transformer bank protection for any two-winding rans- former and many three-winding transformers. This relay includes restrained and unrestrained differentia) cements, as well as phase, residual and negative-sequonce overcurrent clements on both sides ofthe trans- former ‘The differential elements are fast, yet secure, protection for intemal faults. The overcurrent elements cover ‘overloads, and back up protection outside the differential 2one. “The nogative-sequence overcurrent elements provide some unique opportunities t improve system protec~ tion. For example, consider a delta-wye (ransformer bank. A negative-soquence overcurrent clement on the delta side can detect ground faults virtually anywhere in or through the transformer. ‘The standard time- ‘overcurrent curve shapes fault-coordinate easily with fuses and overcurrent relays, and can be reset- coordinated with both electromechanical and fast-eset devices. Metering and event reporting make installation and commissioning simple and deliberate, as operat- ing/estraining currents, karmonics duc to inrush, and CT ratio and connestion errors are easly checked. For oxample, the METER DIF command (Font pane! MMT or communications port) shows the operating, restraining, and harmonic current magnitudes, Because the SEL-587 Relay makes up the current combi- nations internally, wye-connected CTs can be used on both sides of any transformer, and the metering and overcurrent protection functions are not affected by CT connections. ‘Adding a low-cost SEL-301 Dual Universal Overcurrent Relay not only provides redundant backup over~ ‘earrent protection to the overcurrent protection included in the SEL-5R7 Relay: but also can provide ‘breaker failure protection, overstress protection for circuit switchers, tcrtiary monitoring for single-phasing fn banks with high-side fuses, and very sensitive ground-fault protection with core-flux-summing current ‘transformers, Home Office: 2350 NE Hopkins Court « Pullman, WA 99163-5603 Tel: (509) 332-1890 Fax: (09) 332-7990 Fold Offices: 71 Ub Rambler + Holland, PA. 18966-2004 "Vel & Fax: (215) 322-5226 140 Jowa Ave, Suite 201 + Belleville, TL. 62220-3940 ek: (618) 233-4010 Fax: (618) 233-1082 4548 Anderson RO, BTC 591 + Rock Hill, SC 29730-3390 Tel: (803) 329-6300 Fra: (603) 329-6320 15738 W National Ave + Now Bertin, WI 53151-5119 ‘Tel: (414) 789-5260 Fax: (414) 789-2470 “The diagram below shows complete transformer unit and backup protection ney | oe Gad Ge] fel BEA ©) CEQ2 “These two slays may be mowntad ia vutouts, of side-by-aide in uuly 314" uf 19" rack spuue.
