Inductance Calculation of Three Phase Line

Lesson Summary:

Inductance Calculation for three phase transmission

line with:

a. Equilateral Spacing
b. Transposition
c. Bundled conductor
Three Phase Line with Equilateral Spacing

All there conductors are placed at equal spacing

from each other
Transposition of TLs

 Transposition means exchanging the position of the

three phase conductors along the length of the line.

 If the spacing between the three phase conductors is

unequal , unequal flux linkage will occur even when
the three phase currents are balanced.
Three Phase Transposed Line

By transposition each phase conductor occupies

the three positions for one third length of the
line ,therefore the average flux linkage
and inductance become equal.

Bundled Conductors

 Bundling Reduces Electric Field Strength on

Conductor surface Reduces Corona .

 Bundling Increases Effective Radius

(GMR) Reduces Inductance.
3-phase conductor with earth return

 Earth conductors are connected in parallel and ground

at regular intervals along the line
Example
The Conductor configuration of a completely
transposed three phase overhead transmission line
with Bundled conductors is shown in Fig. All the
conductors have a radius of 0.74cm with a 30cm
bundle spacing.
