Harold Scott sold cheap shoes. He had a small lorry, and he bought the shoes.from the factory
and took them from one house to another and tried to sell them to people. He sold a lot of his
shoes in small villages, because there were not many shops there, and people did not want to go
to the town and buy their shoes there. One day Harold drove along the street of a village and
stopped in front of one of the houses. „There was a small boy beside the door. Harold opened the
window of his lorry and said to the boy, "Hello. Is your mother at home?" The boy looked at
him. Then he answered, "Yes, she is."
"That's good," Harold said, and he smiled. He got out of his lorry, took some shoes from the back
and went to the door of the house. He knocked at the door and then he waited, but the door did
not open. After a minute, Harold knocked at the door again and waited for two minutes, but
again the door did not open. Then Harold looked at the small boy and said in an angry voice

Jim and Ken have an uncle whose name is William. He is a farmer. In May he asked the boys
to come and spend their summer holidays on his farm. They were very glad. It was wonderful to
leave the hot, dirty town where they live and go to the country. They were happy to stay with
Uncle William for two months.
They love animals, and there is also a little lake not far from the farm where they can swim.
One day when the weather was very warm they went to the lake with Boxer, Uncle William's
dog. "What a nice day," they said, as they jumped into the water. For a long time they played
with the new big ball which they had got from their father. But suddenly they saw Boxer on the
shore. He barked all the time and didn't look very happy. So the boys went up to him, and he ran
in front of them into a little wood near the lake. The boys wondered what the matter was.
"Oh, what is that?" they said, as they saw something move be hind a tree. Then they saw. One
of Uncle William's cows was in a deep hole with water in it, and could not get out. Jim and Ken
tried to help the cow, but they could not. Then they ran back to the farm and told Uncle William
about the cow. He took two other men with him to the place. It. was a hard job, but at last they
got the cow out of the hole. They all thanked Boxer and gave him some extra meat for dinner. It
was he who had saved the cow.
