Preparation of chloroform water (B.P)
Theoretical back ground:
Chloroform, or trichloromethane, is an organic compound with formula CHCl3. It is a
colorless, sweet-smelling, dense liquid and one of the four chloromethanes and
a trihalomethane. It has historical uses as an anesthetic and narcotic sedative, however in the
modern era it is more widely recognized as a carcinogen and precursor to phosgene gas.
Official formula:
Chloroform =2.5 ml
Distilled water sufficient to make total volume up to 1000 ml .

Procedure:

We took 0.25 ml chloroform measured with the help of pipit and put in volumetric flask placed
water in the beaker and boiled it after that cold water was added in successive portion quantity in
chloroform present in the volumetric flask, shake the mixture vigorously after the addition of each
portion of water then we made the final volume up to 1000 ml with water .

Role of ingredient:

1. Chloroform is an active agent.

2. Water is used as solvent vehicle.

Uses:
It is used as ;
 Flavoring agent.
 Vehicles.
 Expectorant.
 Carminative.
Dose:
5 to 15 ml (per day).
