Handling and restraint of laboratory animal (rabbit)


Requirement:
I. Lab coat
II. Gloves
III. Rabbit
Theory:

 Rabbits are especially susceptible to effect of stress and should


always be approached in a calm and confident manner.
 The handler is restraining the rabbit firmly by the scruff with other
hand reedy to support the animal hindquarters
 The best place to grip the rabbit is by scruff its neck. Grabbing the
rabbit’s scruff will restrain the rabbit, prevent it from biting or
scratching us and allow us to gently pull the rabbit out of the cage.
Procedure:
We handle the rabbit in laboratory by following basic rolls.

1. First of all we wear the gloves on our hands.


2. After that we wear a lab coat.
3. While carrying the rabbit, their feet should not touch our body.
4. Then hold them gently , but firmly not that they feel uncomforted.
5. Don’t lift them too high above the ground.
6. Cover their eyes with our hand or towel, by doing that they feel relax.
7. Don’t block their nostrils while covering their eyes.
8. Around animals move slowly and talk gently.
9. Never pick rabbit by their ears because their ears are very sensitive .
10.Place the rabbit on a pad preferably at the body temperature.
