Lesson Plan

Name: Kiana Robinson

Grade Level: 2nd Grade

Standards: Economics, Financial Literacy, 17- People earn income by working.

Essential Question: How do people earn income by working?

Concept: How people earn income by working.

Target Standards: RL 2.17 Students will report their experience working for income. (DOK 1)
Students will draw conclusions as to why working earns income (DOK 3)

Skills: Financial Literacy, Job Skills

Summative Assessment: Students will answer “How do people earn income by working?” in a
short answer format. They will post their responses to this essential question on the board to
include later in a discussion.

Formative Assessment: Students will create a report of their experiences of working and how
they felt about earning an income.

Self Assessment: Students will decide their income by complexity and quality of their work.
(self-evaluate) Then, give reasoning for their decision through extended response reasoning.
(self-assess)

What will the teacher do to engage students? I will ask students about their household chores.
Do they get an allowance? I will ask them to write why they think they get allowances or why
they do not in a short sentence or two.
How will the students be actively engaged? Students will show what they already know/do not
know about working for income. They will relate the lesson to their own lives.

What will the teacher do to support student exploration? Students will choose a job to have
for the next three days. They will have to explore the classroom for material they will need and
where they will need to perform their job.

How will they be actively engaged? Students will be given a choice. I think student choice is a
great way to keep students engaged in the lesson.

What instructional methods will the teacher use? I will explain to students what duties they
will have in the classroom and how they should be done.

How will students be actively engaged? They will be engaged because they are working for
tickets. They will use these tickets to ‘buy’ prizes.

How will the teacher help students deepen their understanding and elaborate upon their
concepts? I will explain and evaluate their performances. We will discuss money and its value.

What will students do? Each evaluation will focus on the individual student.

How will the teacher provide multiple contexts for evaluation of learning experiences? I
will evaluate their work, grade their report and EQ, and lead a discussion.

How will students be actively engaged? What are ways they can self-reflect on their
understanding? Students will self-reflect on their understanding through their report of the
experience, our discussion, and the short answer essential question.

Three Day Plan

Day One:
1. Have students write down if they have chores at home, what they are, if they get
an allowance, and why they think they get/do not get this allowance.
2. Show students job list
3. Students choose job
4. Have them explore the room and take note of what they will need to complete
their job and where they will need to perform it.
5. Explain experience the students will be taking part in tomorrow.

Day Two:
1. Students will perform their jobs
2. They will begin their report after all jobs are completed, this report will include
the self-assessment.
3. The report will be assigned as homework if not finished

Day Three:
1. Students will receive tickets based off of my assessment and theirs of their job
2. Students will choose prizes (priced differently)
3. Students will answer the EQ, How do people earn income through working?, on a
post-it note. These will be posted on the board in the front of the room.
4. We will discuss the EQ and the experience.
5. Reports will be due.
6. I will grade these reports and their EQ.
