WISHES : Something I want, or desire to have or be.(unreal)
REGRET: Feeling sorry about something you did or didn´t do.
1st- Wish: present, future = wish + simple past, past continuous,
or could / would + BFV. “be” with an unreal idea, use “WERE”.
-I am too short. = I wish I were taller = I wish I weren´t short.
-I want to be taller. = She wishes she were taller/tall.
-He wants to go to college. = He wishes college were free.
-Cristine needs a vacation. = Cristine wishes she went on
vacation. // She wishes she could take a vacation.
Bobby is very shy.= Bobby wishes he wasn´t very shy.=True
*If only I were taller. /*If only he wasn´t very shy.
*If only I were tall enough. /*If only Bob were less shy.
2nd- For Regret about the past: Use wish + S + had(not) + past
participle + © / S + wish + S + could/would + HAVE + past part.
-I didn´t ever study music, and I wanted to be a musician.
I wish I had studied music. I wish I could have been a musician.
-Pepe didn´t have money to go to college.
Pepe wishes he could have had money to go to college.
He wishes he had gotten a scholarship for college.
He wishes he had gone to a free college.
*If only he had had money for college.

3rd- For Regrets with “IF” S + past perfect , S + could/would +
have + past participle = 3rd Conditional=Hypothetical.
- I didn´t study English in high school.
If I had studied English in high school, I would´ve been in a
higher level.
*If only I had studied English in high school.
*If only I would have been in a higher level.
Independent Clause if = Dependent Clause
I could´ve been in a higher level if I had studied English in
high school.
-I didn´t get the job because I didn´t know English
If I had studied English, I could´ve gotten the job.
If I had gotten the job, I could´ve had a better salary.
If I had had a better salary, I would´ve bought a car.
If I had bought a car, I wouldn´t have taken the bus.
If I hadn´t had to take the bus, I would´ve been safer.
If I had been safer from so many people on a bus, I wouldn´t
have been in danger by a virus. // would be infected NOW.
Change the outcome to the PRESENT = Now, Today, Nowadays
4th- For stronger wishes about the present, future , or stronger
regrets = “ IF ONLY” Doesn´t need an Independent Clause
-I want to go to the beach.
If only I went to the beach./If only I were at the beach.
- I married Pepe. (Not Necessary to say anything else)
If only I hadn´t married Pepe. (I wouldn´t have had 10 kids.)
- I didn´t win the lottery. Simple past = change past perfect
If only I had won the lottery.
- She needs the lottery. Simple present = change to simple past
If only she won the lottery
If only he could see you now.
