Find two different feature articles about the topic, and discuss the different treatment given to the topic
from two sources. This treatment should be seen in the quality of the language, the use of description,
the use of tables and graphs, as well as the use of photographs or illustrations. Discuss how the
treatment differs, and what made one article better than the other.

Topic: 2022 Philippine Presidential Election

First article/source: Philippine President Duterte will step down next year. Here are his potential successors

 Quality of the Language:

The quality of the language is in a formal manner, but it is simple to understand and it is also fair. With
that, the article was able to recognize and retell the topic's main points. They avoided using words that
portray a person, an event, or a situation in a biased light.

 Use of Description:
In the first part of the article, they included a summary of the topic as well as many key points. I think
this is very important because this will help the readers to decide whether they want to continue reading
the news article or if the information provided is sufficient. They described each presidential candidates
very clearly and concise.

 Use of Tables and Graphs:

The article didn’t use tables and graphs, but it is still important to remember that tables and graphs give
journal editors and reviewers a quick overview of the research findings during the initial review stage,
as well as readers once the article is published. It's worth noting that tables and figures only add value
to a manuscript if they're concise and descriptive enough.

 Use of Photographs or Illustrations:

The article included the pictures of each presidential candidates. I believe that a picture is an excellent
way to quickly communicate your message to an audience. The photographs added an exciting and
eye-catching element to the story.
Second article/source: Ambiguously Democratic: Parties, Coalitions, and Candidates in the 2022 Philippine
Elections

 Quality of the Language:

Rather than descriptive narrative writing, they used formal, concise language with short sentences.
They used third person and past tense, although note that the final paragraph may switch to future
tense. They also paraphrased the reported speech of the people mentioned in the news article.

 Use of Description:
They used the inverted pyramid format—putting the most critical information in the early paragraphs
and following with supporting information. This will ensure that the reader is presented with the most
important information first. The conclusion has a final bit of information, a summary, or a carefully
chosen quote to leave the reader with a strong sense of the story.

 Use of Tables and Graphs:

Although the article did not include tables or graphs, it is important to remember that tables and graphs
provide a quick overview of the research findings to journal editors and reviewers during the initial
review stage, as well as readers once the article is published. Tables and figures only add value to a
manuscript if they are concise and descriptive.

 Use of Photographs or Illustrations:

Each presidential candidate's picture was included in the article. There are supporting images as well. I
believe that using a picture to quickly communicate your message to an audience is a great idea. The
photographs gave the story an exciting and eye-catching element.
