Sec 17 The Dowry system is a very common practice in Bangladesh. Dowry refers to the property given by the parents in their daughter’s marriage. In the dowry, the daughter parents provide money, goods etc., to their daughter's marriage (Kamruzzaman, 2015). Dowry is a very nasty thing in Bangladesh. But this dowry system runs from the ancient period (Kamruzzaman, 2015). This is not a new thing in our society. According to Kamruzzaman (2015), the “dowry system emerged mainly in Hindu community and the most ancient institute of marriage in Vedic period” (p.113). In the Hindu community, the father of the bride provides to the groom “‘Kanyadhana’ which was gifts to the virgin bride and ‘Varadakshina’ ‘Stridhana’” (Kamruzzaman, 2015, p.113). In the short story of dowry, 15 years of girl killed by her husband just because her father did not pay the dowry amount (Fahmina, 2017). The shocking news is every year many girls and women’s torture, abuse by her husband and husband’s family just because of the girl’s family didn’t provide sufficient amount of dowry. The dowry is given to the groom's family the name of honour (Fahmina, 2017). According to Fahmina (2017), “If there were no giving or taking of dowry, there would not be any dowry related violence” (para. 1).
