Mass flow or pressure flow hypothesis

Mass flow or pressure flow hypothesis was proposed by Munch.

In leaves, sucrose is co-transported into the sieve tubes through indirect
proton pump mechanism by transfer cells.
Low water potential is created in sieve tubes of the leaves, thus water
enters the sieve tubes through osmosis from the xylem.
High turgor pressure is generated in the sieve tubes and forces sugar
out of the leaves into the sieve tubes of stem and roots.
The sieve tubes in the leaves act as the 'source' of pressure.
At the roots, sucrose is unloaded through passive transport and used in
respiration or converted to starch for storage.
The water potential of sieve tubes in roots is increased, causing the water
molecules to diffuse out through osmosis into the xylem of roots.
Low turgor pressure is created in the sieve tubes of the roots.
The sieve tube in the roots acts as the 'sink' of pressure.
So, mass flow of organic substances from the sieve tube in the leaves to
the sieve tube in the roots occur.
This can be explained using the Munch model as shown below.
