REPORT FOR STATIC AXIAL COMPRESSION

LOAD TESTS ON INSTRUMENTED BORED PILE
PTP2 (900 mm Ø)

1. INTRODUCTION
This report presents the results of static axial compression load tests carried out on the
instrumented bored pile, called PTP2, at the above mentioned proposed site.

The pile has a nominal diameter of 900 mm and a penetration depth of 10.705 m from piling
platform level. The pile was to be tested to 18900 kN (3 x WL) or failure load whichever
comes first, in the test programme.

The main objective of the instrumented load test is to establish / verify the following for the
use in the design of working piles which are to be constructed in soil strata having similar
geological structure and by adopting similar construction practices :-
(i) To determine/confirm the bearing capacity of bored pile and its apportionment
into shaft friction for various soil/rock strata and end bearing;
(ii) To evaluate the design parameters in relation to the ultimate shaft friction and
end bearing; and
(iii) To study the behaviour of pile settlement and structural shortening under the applied
loads.
The load-movement relationship, the distribution of axial load along the pile and the load
transfer characteristics of the pile will be presented and discussed in details in this test report.
Results will be presented both in tabulated and graphical formats for easy discussion.
1
2. LOCATION OF TEST PILE AND SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
Test pile location plan, installation record (including description of actual subsurface
condition encountered during boring) and relevant SI borehole information at the proposed
site are attached in Appendix A for ease of reference.

3. DESCRIPTION OF TEST PILE

3.1 STRUCTURAL PROPERTIES
The instrumented test pile constructed was a bored cast-in-situ reinforced concrete pile
having a nominal diameter of 900 mm and a penetration depth of 10.705 m from
piling platform level. It was reinforced with 30 no. 32 mm diameter High Yield (H.Y.)
longitudinal steel bars with 12 mm diameter (H.Y) links at 150mm to 300 mm centers.
The concrete grade used was G40T2.

3.2 PILE INSTRUMENTATION

For the instrumented test bored pile, pile instrumentation was conducted using state-of-the-art
GLOSTREXT deformation monitoring system for determining axial loads and movements at
various levels down the pile shaft including the pile base level.

(i) VW Global Strain Gauges:

The Global Strain Gauges were installed at 5 levels (level A to E) as shown in Figure
A.

Global Strain Gauges Level A was aimed at 1.0 m bgl ;

Level B was aimed at 4.0 m bgl; Level C was aimed at 7.0 m bgl;
Level D was aimed at 8.6 m bgl and Level E was aimed at 10.2 m bgl accordingly.

(ii) Vibrating Wire (VW) Extensometers:

The VW Extensometers were installed at 5 levels. The Extensometers installed at the
anchored intervals were designated as :

Ext. Lev 1a & 1b at interval from 0.5 m to 1.5 m depth;

2
Ext. Lev 2a & 2b at interval from 1.5 m to 6.5 m depth;
Ext. Lev 3a & 3b at interval from 6.5 m to 7.5 m depth;
Ext. Lev 4a & 4b at interval from 7.5 m to 9.7 m depth and
Ext. Lev 5a & 5b at interval from 9.7 m to 10.7 m depth accordingly.

During static load testing, deformation of the pile under loading produces relative movement
between each and every two anchored intervals causing a change in the strain gauge wire
tension in the vw precision transducers and a corresponding change in its resonant frequency
of vibration. The resonant frequency is measured by plucking the Glostrext sensors to readout
box / datalogger, which also measures the frequency and displays the shortening reading and
strain reading.

The Glostrext technique has the following advantages compared to conventional

instrumentation methods:
(i) the method enables the instrumentation sensors to be post-installed after
casting of pile, and thus minimizes the risk of instruments being damaged
during the concreting process;
(ii) the method also significantly simplifies the effort of monitoring setup at pile
top for multiples tell-tales, which might not be possible to be installed
satisfactorily due to congestion in small-sized piles;
(iii) the post-install nature of the method enables engineers to select
instrumentation levels along the as-built depth of piles using pile installation
records and site investigation data as guides;
(iv) the method reliably measures segmental shortening and strains over an entire
section of the test pile during each loading step of a typical static load test and
unlike conventional strain gauges which only provide localized strain
measurements, it integrates individual strain measurements over a larger and
more representative sample, thus making the test results more informative.

3
3.3 PILE MOVEMENT MONITORING SYSTEM
The pile top settlement was monitored using the following instruments:
(i) Vertical scale rules fixed to pile top sighted by a precise levels with
micrometer attached, with the use of TBM reference for correction purposes;
and
(ii) 4 nos of Linear Variation Displacement Transducers (LVDTs) mounted to the
reference beams, with plunger pressing vertically against glass plates fixed to
pile top. Vertical scales were also provided on the reference beams to monitor
any movement during load testing.

4. PROCEDURE FOR THE INSTALLATION OF TEST PILE

The test pile construction and pile installation record is attached in Appendix A. The pile
was cast on 8/03/2019.

5. LOADING ARRANGEMENT AND TEST PROGRAMMES

The instrumented test pile was tested by the normal Maintained Load (ML) Method, using
kentledge reaction system. In the set-up used, the test load was applied using 4 no. hydraulic
jacks acting against the main beam. The jacks were operated by an electric pump. The applied
load was indicated by calibrated Vibrating Wire Load Cells.
The calibration certificates on VW Load Cells, LVDTs and Glostrext Sensors /Precision
Transducers are attached in Appendix C for reference.

6 RESULTS AND ASSESSMENT OF PILE PERFORMANCE

6.1 PERFORMANCE OF INSTRUMENTATION
Vibrating-wire load cells, Glostrext extensometers and sensors, jacking system and
pile movement monitoring devices were found to be in good working order, indicating
the success of the instrumentation scheme.
The summary of pile top settlement, pile base settlement and pile shortening readings
are given in Table T-1a and Table T-1b. (Full record logged by automatic Micro-1000

4
datalogger is given in Appendix E). The large quantity of high quality data collected
from these instruments is able to produce reliable information for meaningful
interpretation.

6.2 LOAD-MOVEMENT BEHAVIOUR OF THE PILE

Based on the summarised data in Table T-1a to T-1b, the load versus pile top
settlement, load versus pile base settlement and shortening readings were plotted as
shown in Figures P1, P2 and P3 respectively.
a) 1st Cycle :
In the 1st Cycle, the observed maximum pile top settlement at the loading of
6362 kN (corresponding to 1xWL) was 5.36 mm. Upon unloading to zero, the
pile rebounded to a residual pile top settlement of 1.58 mm.

b) 2nd Cycle (Maintained Load Test):

In the 2nd Cycle, the observed cumulative maximum pile top settlement at the
peak load of 12664 kN (corresponding to 2xWL) was 14.82 mm. Upon
unloading to zero, the pile rebounded to a residual pile top settlement of 6.59
mm.

c) 3rd Cycle (Maintained Load Test):

In the 3rd Cycle, the observed cumulative maximum pile top settlement at the
peak load of 18863 kN (corresponding to 3xWL) was 25.12 mm. Upon
unloading to zero, the pile rebounded to a residual pile top settlement of 13.00
mm.

6.3 SHAFT FRICTION AND END-BEARING

6.3.1 Load Distribution and Transfer Characteristics
The load distribution curves for the test cycles are plotted in Fig. S1(i) to S1(iii) based
on strain-load computations made in the Tables S1.
The load distribution curves, capable of indicating the load distribution along the shaft
and at the base, were derived from computations based on the measured changes in

5
strain gauge readings and estimated pile properties (steel content, cross-section areas
and modulii of elasticity). Computations made for test pile are based on as-built
details (including concreting record) known from the construction record.

Load transferred (PAve) at mid-point of each anchored interval is calculated as follows:

P = ε (Ec*Ac + Es*As )
where
ε = average change in global strain gauge readings.
Ac = cross-sectional area of concrete.
Ec = Concrete Modulus.
As = cross-sectional area of steel reinforcement bars.
Es = Young's Modulus of Elasticity in steel = 200 kN/mm2

For the test pile, the concrete pile modulus, Ec was back-calculated by measuring the global
strains near the pile top (collar casing debonded level from interval from 0.5 m to 1.5 m for
this case, sensor 1a & 1b) and the pile top loads. For each stage of loading, Ec is back-
calculated by assuming that the load at the level A is equal to the applied load at the pile top.

The values obtained for the loading stages of the test cycle are given in Table S1. Ec values
are also known to be strain dependant, therefore the back-calculated concrete values for test
pile are plotted against measured strain in Figure Ec (i) to obtain best fit curve to further
increase the accuracy of analysis. The difference between the loads at any two levels
represents the shaft load carried by the portion of pile between the two levels.

6.3.2 Shaft Friction

The maximum mobilised unit shaft friction between the different instrumented levels
is computed as shown in the Table S2. These results are plotted as shown in the
transfer characteristics in Fig S2a for the test cycles.
Denoting P as the applied pile top load and fs as the unit shaft friction, the following
observation can be derived from a close study of load transfer characteristics
presented.

6
GL to Level B (4.0m depth bgl) :
At 6362 kN (1st Cycle) pile top load, fs attained was 78.0 kN/m2, at 12664 kN (2nd
Cycle) fs was 171.4 kN/m2 and at 18863 kN (3rd Cycle) fs was 286.1 kN/m2 .

Level B (4.0m bgl) to Level C (7.0m bgl) :

At 6362 kN (1st Cycle) pile top load, fs attained was 271.4 kN/m2, at 12664 kN (2nd
Cycle) fs was 430.1 kN/m2 and at 18863 kN (3rd Cycle) fs was 568.8 kN/m2 .

Level C (7.0m bgl) to Level D (8.6m bgl) :

At 6362 kN (1st Cycle) pile top load, fs attained was 308.0 kN/m2, at 12664 kN (2nd
Cycle) fs was 537.0 kN/m2 and at 18863 kN (3rd Cycle) fs was 817.9 kN/m2 .

Level D (8.6m bgl) to Level E (10.2m bgl) :

At 6362 kN (1st Cycle) pile top load, fs attained was 254.6 kN/m2, at 12664 kN (2nd
Cycle) fs was 565.1 kN/m2 and at 18863 kN (3rd Cycle) fs was 764.5 kN/m2 .

6.3.3 End Bearing

The maximum mobilized pile base load was found to be 3643 kN (or 5752 kN/m2) at
the pile top load of 18863 kN (3rd Cycle).
