Glossary

Analyse – examine something in detail to discover meaning and/ or essential features.

Analysis – a detailed study or examination of something to discover more about it

Assess – evaluate or estimate the nature, ability or quality.

Describe – provide a detailed statement or account of something

Discuss – explore issues in either speech or writing.

Evaluate – gather information to give a measure of the effectiveness of something.

Evaluation – a judgement of quality, importance, amount or value of something

Establish – bring out, ascertain, show the existence of something by giving evidence.

Explain – give a reasoned account which justifies / clarifies an issue and / or points of an issue.

Identify – determine the factors or features of an activity, requirement, issue and / or a point.

Justify – give a reason and / or an explanation for an activity, process, theory, etc.

List – make a list of something.

Minimum core – the minimum core of literacy, language, numeracy and ICT details the
knowledge, understanding and personal skills in English, mathematics and ICT expected of all
teachers in the sector

Rationale – the reasons or intentions for a particular action

Report – a systematic, well organised document which defines and analyses a subject or
problem. Reports are typically written in sections and vary in structure

Research task – a task that involves a secondary research (of sources that already exist). It
usually requires the summary of research, analysis, synthesis and collection of existing data.

Review – assess with the intention of instituting change if necessary.

State – express something definitely or clearly.
