Name and purpose of this period of experience

While in this position,


I designed sewer, water and storm-water infrastructures for township projects in Capetown.
I also prepared the contract documents including specifications for these projects.
I worked as Residence Engineer on some of the projects I designed.
I performed the design of the infrastructures under supervision.

The projects I worked on included the following:

Design of Civil infrastructures for the University of Western Cape,


Design of Civil Infrastructures for Delph Township (1000 lots)
Design of N-2 Road Rehabilitation.
Design of bulk storm water culvert.

Nature of problem addressed in this period; method of analysis, developing solutions and evaluation, decisions
and judgement

The problem addressed in this period was to provide infrastructural design that met client’s need at the most
economical cost.
The method of analysis included the followings
Open channel flow analysis
Hydraulic modelling using Hardy Cross Equation
Storm water analysis using the rational formula
Pavement analysis using the CBR method of design
Pavement life cycle analysis using net present value and cost /benefit ratio

Documentation, report, presentations, prepared

I prepared the construction drawings under supervision, the construction drawings included plans, profiles of the
road, water and sewer infrastructures as well as standard and specific details.
I also included road cross sections at specific stations in the construction drawings.

Management of materials, machines, manpower, methods or money, contracts


I prepared project schedule before commencing on the design.
I measured contractors work onsite and approved monthly payment request as necessary.
I recorded daily activities on site in the daily site inspection book.
I also tracked the daily weather conditions for calculation of the project completion time
I performed construction engineering.

Interactions with clients, stakeholders and other disciplines

I attended monthly project meetings to discuss project updates.


I prepared minutes of meetings that was circulated to all the stake-holders.

Health and safety considerations; hazards and environmental considerations, other legislation

The Environmental Impact Report for these projects were prepared by environmental consultants.

What outcomes or levels were you working towards demonstration

I was working towards demonstrating competencies in the design of water, sewer and road infrastructures in
accordance with South Africa’s Builders Standards.
I was also working towards demonstrating competencies in writing specifications

Applicant’s contribution to the work

I performed topographical survey,


I performed hydraulic calculations for the water, sewer and storm water infrastructure using manning’s open
channel equation, Hazen Williams and Darcy Welsbach Equation.
I also checked the stability of culverts in accordance with the provisions of TMH7, Parts 1and 2, Code of Practice
for the design of Bridges and Culverts in South Africa.
I prepared contract specifications with respect to SABS 1200.
I performed pavement analysis and design
