FRICTION

1. Friction is the force resisting the relative motion of solid surfaces, fluid
layers, and material elements sliding against each other.

• Dry friction resists relative lateral motion of two solid surfaces in

contact.

Dry friction is subdivided into:

a) static friction between non-moving surfaces, and

b) kinetic friction (also called as dynamic friction) between moving
surfaces.

Dynamic friction is of the following two types:

1. Sliding friction. It is the friction, experienced by a body when it
slides over another body.
2. Rolling friction. It is the friction, experienced by a body when it
rolls over another body.

2. Coulomb's law of friction - The law states that for two dry solid surfaces
sliding against one another, the magnitude of the kinetic friction exerted
through the surface is independent of the magnitude of the velocity (i.e., the
speed) of the slipping of the surfaces against each other.
