Thomas Edison

Thomas Edison is often credited with being the most famous American inventor. He created the first
practical electric incandescent lamp, the light bulb. He also created the first industrial research
laboratory and helped introduce the modern age of electricity.

The phonograph and the motion picture are two more inventions that Edison is famous for either
inventing or working on.

The telegraph was introduced in America in the 1840s. Edison learnt telegraphy in 1863 after saving
a child from a train. The child’s father decided to train Edison in telegraphy but in 1869 Edison
stopped to become a full-time inventor. learning telegraphy furthered Edison’s interest in
communications which was the base of many of his inventions.

Thomas Edison was born in 1847 in Ohio, USA. he was the youngest of seven children. his mother
was a schoolteacher who taught him to read and write. he was interested in technology from a
young age. he was at school for only a short time and was mostly home schooled by his mother.

The invention of the lightbulb was disruptive and changed the world quite a bit. it brought electricity
to the home and the ability to have light at night time. it also furthered electrical power grids. it
made homes much safer because they did not need to be lit with fire, especially during the night. fire
and lanterns used to be the main way that people could light homes and places in the dark, and it
wasn't always perfect.

Thomas Edison is famous for having thousands of failures during his invention of the light bulb. he
and his workers tried out many, many elements before finding the one that would produce a
successful lightbulb. he always tried to use these failures as learning experiences.

The lightbulb has had a competitive history, full of failure but it has advanced society in many ways
as well.
