Placement Test

Note to Teachers
The Smart Phonics Placement Test has been designed to help teachers accurately place students
into the appropriate level of the series by evaluating students’ existing knowledge of phonics.

The test questions come directly from the five levels of the Smart Phonics series, starting from
single letter sounds and ending with double letter vowels. The test is divided into two sections:

Part 1 – Listening (15 questions)
Part 2 – Reading and Writing (28 questions)

There are 43 questions in total. Each question is worth 1 point. Allow students approximately 20
minutes to complete the test – five minutes for Part 1 and 15 minutes for Part 2.

0-11 Book 1: Single Letters

12-19 Book 2: Short Vowels

20-27 Book 3: Long Vowels

28-35 Book 4: Double Letter Consonants

36-43 Book 5: Double Letter Vowels

Placement Test Advice

For students who score above a 40 on a placement test, a brief review of
Smart Phonics 5 followed by a higher level series would be recommended.
