TRANSPERSONAL THERAPY

ORIENTAL SERIES II: Tantra

ONTOGONY
Carlos de León
Common ground in a spiritual or
transpersonal approach
• Body-Mind = Holistic
• Consciousness and its levels of experience
• Levels of consciousness
• Vital energy flow
• Theory of Personality
• Conflict Resolution Technics
• Growth and transformation techniques
• Spiritual Goals (Transpersonal for the academics)
Key Points to understand
the tradition
1. Vision of reality.
2. Theory of personality.
3. Origin of Conflict.
4. Partial remedy.
5. Total remedy.
6. Opposing factors.
7. Applied techniques.
1. Vision of reality.
The word TANTRA is composed of two Sanskrit roots: TAN
and TRA.
The root TAN has four main meanings:
1) fluidity or total fluidity, without limits.
2) expansion.
3) essence.
4) weave.
When we speak of our essence, of our true nature, of the
ultimate reality, we could call it TAN.

The root TRA means vehicle, instrument, liberation or

protection. So, when we talk about Tantra, we talk about
the ultimate and total reality, as well as a path, a way of
life to join that eternal flow, always in motion, always
expanding and always creating new realities.
God (Paramashiva)
The Origin of everything:

Paramashiva: the good and the Supreme Being.

Parasamvit: supreme experience, beyond all

experience of knowledge, including consciousness,
observation, information and wisdom.

Chaitanya: pure consciousness, perfect, divine.

Parameshvara: the Supreme Lord.

Anuttara: higher than anything.

• Supreme Being.
• Self-dependent.
• Luminous consciousness.
• Cause of everything.
•Present in everything.
•Bliss and self-satisfaction in himself.
Develops Lila through its:
A) Intent or Kamakala, in Spanda
B) His 5 primordial Shaktis
C) His 5 actions of Grace:

1. Create - emerge -Srsti

2. Maintain -Sthiti
3. Destroy-retreat-Samhara
4. Conceal (Anakhya-inexplicable, mystery,
to rest) -Tirodhana
5. Reveal (bhasa, enlightenment) -Anugraha

Spanda
or the expressive nature of Kamakala,
Paramashiva’s intent, in the Shakti

Spanda can mean the following concepts: pulsation,

vibration, movement, explosion, tremor, expansion,
flow and to unfold.

Creation is Abhasa, the manifestation of divine

consciousness, a glow that arises through Spanda.

Spanda has two cycles:

• Unmesha (opening of the eye), is the unfolding and
manifestation of the universe.
• Nimesha is the recollection or non-manifestation of
the universe.
SHIVA
•The Inner Being.

•The Divine Being, the Self, the subject.

• Consciousness

Shiva (Consciousness) has eight characteristics that are his
perfections:

1. Being in itself; independence.

2. Immutability; it is not subject to change.
3. Direct knowledge; without mediation of any medium.
4. Omniscience; his knowledge extends to all things.
5. Absolute purity, absence of imperfection, inaccessible to
limitations.
6. Absolute benevolence, or grace.
7. Omnipotence.
8. Happiness.

Shiva is qualified as nirguna, "transcending qualities", beyond

all determination, not because he is devoid of attributes and
qualities, but because he is not affected by the three
qualities or guna of manifestation: satva, rajas, and tamas;
intelligence, dynamism and inertia, or also luminosity,
movement and unconsciousness.

2. Theory of personality.

• Koshas or Sheaths of the Self

• Shariras or Bodies
• Antahkarana
• Five States of Consciousness
5 Koshas or
Sheaths of
Atman
1. Physical
2. Pranic
3. Mental
4. Wisdom
5. Bliss-Ananda
3 Shariras (Bodies)
and the 5 Koshas
The 5 Koshas (sheaths)
Sthula Sharira Sukshma Sharira Karana Sharira

• Nadis • Manas • Buddhi • Chit

• Etheric Aura • Ahamkara • Paramental Aura • Spiritual Aura
• Vitality Aura • Double • Aura of Gifts • Aura of Destiny
• Karmic Aura • Emotional Aura • Aura of perfection
• Complexes • Mental Aura
Antahkarana, the internal cause
Manas (mind): the lower, rational part of the mind that
connects to the external world.

Chitta (memory): the consciousness where impressions,

memories and experiences are stored.

Ahamkara (ego): the attachment or identification of the

ego, also known as "I am".

Buddhi (intellect): the part of the mind that makes

decisions.

Chitt (Consciousness), the Observer

Antahkarana refers to the entire psychological process,

including emotions, the innner instrument also includes the
10 senses (hearing, feeling, seeing, tasting, smelling,
speaking, grasping, moving, procreating and eliminating),
5 elements and 5 vayus.
5 States of Consciousness
1. Vigil: Jagrat
In this state, atman (the Supreme Being) is mainly
mistaken for annamaya kosha (the "sheath
composed of food", the physical body).

Therefore, the jiva (soul) travels in objectivity and

becomes an object in itself, mainly ignoring its
subjective consciousness.

In the waking state, the jiva is caught by objects

(both external and internal) and loses awareness
of his true nature as a pure "subject."
2. Dream: Svapna
The dream state is the state in which the
Supreme Being misidentifies itself primarily with
pranamaya kosha (the "sheath composed of
life force") and manomaya kosha (the "sheath
composed of mind").

Therefore, the jiva travels in the cognitive world

(the imaginative world of dreams), becomes
one with that realm, and loses consciousness
of atman (pure subjectivity).
Sometimes while in svapna, atman mistakenly
identifies with vijnanamaya kosha (the "sheath
composed of intellectual knowledge and
understanding") and then there are lucid
dreams.

In the dream state, the jiva is caught by

internal objects and loses sight of his true
nature as a pure "subject."
3. Deep sleep: Sushupti
In deep sleep, the Supreme Being mistakenly
identifies with anandamaya kosha (the "sheath
composed of bliss," the causal body).

The soul travels in a subjective world without

being aware of it and becomes one with that
unconscious subjectivity.

Because this state is related to a body, it still has

a thin veil of objective character, but the
content of the experience is simply bliss.

In deep sleep the jiva is free from objects but

has not yet transcended itself.
4. Turya
Turya is the state in which there is no
identification with any of the koshas.

Instead, there is a pure and perfect

awareness of Consciousness. Therefore,
there are no wrong identifications and
avidya (ignorance) vanishes.

Only when turya appears do we realize that

the seemingly solid physical world we live in
is also like a dream.

It is the revelation of the background of the

other three states of consciousness
(wakefulness, sleep and deep sleep).
5. Turyatita: beyond the fourth

It is the state of Integration of Turiya with

everyday life.

The state is unconditioned and

independent of any brain activity.

It is the state of continuous presence in

True Nature.
3. Origin of conflict.
The 5 Kanchukas or coverings of Maya that
limit the 5 Shaktis, give us individuality and
ignorance at the same time.
1. Kalā.- Reduces universal consciousness.

2. Kāla.- Reduces eternity and brings limitations with respect

to time.

3. Raga.- Reduces full satisfaction and produces desires.

4. Vidya.- Reduces omniscience and produces intellectual

limitations.

5. Niyati.- Reduces freedom and limits with respect to cause

and space.
4. Partial Remedy.
In Tantra we have four manifestations or fruits when one
connects with this eternal flow of reality. Partial remedies are
to achieve any of these or a combination of them but not
all 4.

1. MOKSHA = liberation.
2. BOGHA =bliss, pleasure.
3. ARTHA = material, spiritual, intellectual wealth.
4. DHARMA = understanding of natural and divine
laws and acting in harmony according to those
divine laws.
5. Total Remedy.
The meeting of the 4 fruits

1. MOKSHA = liberation.
2. BOGHA =bliss, pleasure.
3. ARTHA = material, spiritual, intellectual wealth.
4. DHARMA = understanding of natural and divine
laws and acting in harmony according to those
divine laws.
6. Opposing Factors.
The 3 Malas or impurities,
keep us in Karma.
1. āṇavamala – to be incomplete, not full. It
is the fundamental ignorance of what we
are.

2. māyā mala – limitation of knowledge,

avidyā, illusion.

3. kārma mala - limitation of power of

action, wrong identity in the limited being
and not in Shiva.
7. Applied techniques.

1) Mantras and Mudras for:

• Moksha
• Dharma
• Artha
• Bhoga

2) Kriyas or techniques for Kundalini

and chakras.
Mantras and Mudras for:
• Moksha
• Dharma
• Artha
• Bhoga
Mantra
It is the subtle energy that is managed in Tantra.

It is the universe of energy, normally associated

with sound.

Man: Dual mind, comes from manas.

Tra: Vehicle of liberation, transport.

Mantra is entering a more intuitive subtle energy

level, which frees our dual or logical mind, that is,
you do "Mantra" and use that dual mind energy,
you concentrate it and use it for something
conscious.

The Mantra is homeopathy for the Mind.

Mantras are repetitive sounds used to penetrate the
depths of the unconscious mind and adjust the
vibration of all aspects of your being.

Mantras are vibrated by chanting out loud, mentally

practicing, or listening to them.

The experience of how sound vibrations affect your

being is Naad Yoga.

Naad means "the essence of sound" and yoga

means "union".

Naad Yoga uses sound vibrations to raise your

consciousness and tune you into the sound that
began creation and is constantly vibrating.

This universal sound is known as Anahat.

Everything in the Universe has a frequency.
Happiness or sadness, joy or regret are vibrational
frequencies in the mind.

When we chant a mantra, we choose to invoke the

positive power contained in those syllables.

Whether it is for prosperity, tranquility, increased

intuition or any other possible benefit inherent in
mantras, simply by chanting them we are setting
vibrations in motion that will have an effect.

Mantras directly affect the mind and prana.

Mantras are not a prayer, or phrases of positive

thinking.
Mantras are sounds formulated by their power
of action (Shakti), not in their meaning, although
they generally have a great symbolic meaning
given by tradition.

Mantras contain and are repeated with an

intention.

Mantras are an active link with the lineage and

teacher who manifested it and with the chain of
practitioners.
Mudras

Mudra means "seal", or anything that seals,

it is also translated as "posture" or "gesture".

Mudras are tools to release energy (prana)

and direct it to areas of the body that need
healing.

Each mudra has a particular purpose and

moves energy in a specific way throughout
the body to create subtle physical, mental
and emotional changes.

The Hands in Tantra are appreciated in

many ways.
First, our hands are an extension of our
heart and connect our innermost thoughts
and prayers with the outside world.

The hands are organs of contact with the

world and where we clearly express our
giving and receiving.

In the Hands we have a map of our Karma

to be resolved, their lines and their shape
act as a guide and reminder in this life.

The fingers of the hands are directly related

to the 5 elements and therefore can affect
their action in our physical, psychological
and spiritual experience.
Relationship of the fingers with
the elements and Chakras
1. Thumb: Stimulates the fire element that
corresponds to the solar plexus chakra
(Manipura).

2. Index finger: Stimulates air. It governs the heart

chakra (Anahata).

3. Middle finger: Represents the sky (ether) and

stimulates the throat chakra (Vishudda).

4. Ring finger: It is for the Earth element that

stimulates the root chakra (Muladhara).

5. Little finger: Represents the water that influences

the sacral chakra (Svadhisthana).

Kriyas for Kundalini
and Chakras
Kundalini
It is the presence and action of the Shakti or
cosmic energy in our body.

It is the feminine presence of the divine, she

is the Goddess sustaining us and leading us
to evolve.

Kundalini is a great energy potential in our

subtle body, which is generally asleep.

Kundalini purifies the Chakras and opens

them, just like the Nadis.
It wakes up at the base of Muladhara and
begins to ascend at a subtle level through
the spinal fluid of the marrow, up to the
brain, transforming your nervous system,
and enabling it to perceive realities
normally hidden from our experience.

Without Kundalini, our nervous system never

matures; a sleeping Kundalini means
keeping us in a fetal state, at the level of
the nervous system.
Kundalini, means "coiled", and it
resembles a sleeping snake
Chakras
Chakra means Wheel.
They are vortexes of Shakti
or energy.
They are also called Lotuses, the petals are
the sub-vortexes of the Chakra
The Chakras are related to:

• Elements
• Nadis
• Vayus
• Glands
• Psychological Experiences
• Levels of Consciousness
• Lokas or Planes
The 7 Main Chakras
Muladhara ("root", "foundation" and "support").
The Root Chakra.
Color: red

Location: On the lower part of the coccyx, in the

perineum for men and the cervical area for
women.

The function of this chakra is to connect all your

physical and bodily energy with the Earth itself.

Your root chakra is also linked to everything you

need to survive, including the act of breathing,
eating, sleeping, and experiencing physical,
financial, and emotional security.

The right to be here

LAM for Muladhara – Earth Element
The qualities of the chakra include:
• Innocence
• Purity
• Simplicity
• Childhood joy
• Inner wisdom
• Dignity
• Balance
• Purpose and direction
• Ground connection
• Harmony with nature
Experience and Benefits:

A balanced Muladhara chakra will help you

maintain and increase your inner wisdom.

The wisdom of this chakra will allow you to avoid

action (or inaction) that is harmful to yourself or
others.

A balanced chakra will also lead to better

memory, attention, and concentration.

Also, the innocence of this chakra will allow you to

see other people and situations without prejudice.

Your actions will be pure as a result.

Svadhisthana (" the place of the self“).
The Sacral Chakra

Also known as the Sexual Chakra it has to do with

your sexual identity and your creative part as a

VAM for Swadhistana – Water element
The qualities of Swadisthan chakra include:
• Creativity
• Appreciation of beauty
• Inspiration
• Generation of ideas

Experience and Benefits:
The most important physiological function of your
Swadisthan chakra is the breakdown of fat particles
within your abdomen to replace the gray and white
matter of your brain, the matter of "thought".

Excessive thinking and planning are very common in

today's world. Ultimately, the right side of your
Swadisthan chakra can be depleted with all that
thought. When this happens, you may find that your
creativity falters and your work becomes lifeless. You
may no longer experience spontaneity and joy.

When your Swadisthan chakra is balanced,

overthinking is avoided. You will be able to maintain a
calm mind free of worries, doubts, confusion and
distraction. The creative work you do while in this state
of balance will be spiritually enhanced. It will have
"heart".
Manipura (“the shining gem“).
The Navel Chakra.

The Chakra of the Third Eye
Color: indigo

Location: in the middle of the forehead, it extends to the

pineal gland of the brain.

This mystical energy center opens you up to expanded states

of consciousness, far beyond the 5 senses and the material
world in which we live. Extra-sensorial perception, intuition,
and psychic abilities are born from the third eye. Long before
brain imaging, many ancient cultures knew of the presence
of the third eye, believing it to be our human mystical
connection with the divine.

When your Third Eye is balanced, you will feel equally attuned
to the physical and spiritual world, being able to connect with
both your ego and your soul.

Right to see or become aware

AUM for Ajna - Mahatattva
The Chakra of the Third Eye

The qualities of Agnya chakra include:

• Forgiveness
• Compassion
• Humility
• Thoughtless awareness
• Ego and superego
Experience and Benefits:
Your Agnya chakra controls your sight, hearing, and thoughts.
It also controls your pituitary gland. This essential gland, also
known as "the master gland", regulates all other endocrine
glands and influences their growth, physiological maturation,
metabolism and sleep.

Your left Agnya is connected to the superego portion of your

brain, which retains your memories, experiences, habits, and
emotions. Your right Agnya is connected to the ego part of
your brain, which focuses on the future through thought,
planning and action. Your ego and superego intersect within
the Agnya chakra.

If your left Agnya is overactive, your superego can swell like a

balloon. All that focus on the past can lead to the
development of a highly emotional temperament and self-
injurious thoughts or behaviors. Similarly, if your right Agnya is
hyperactive, your ego will swell with all the excess thinking
and planning. This can lead to agitation, frequent loss of
patience, and even aggressive behavior towards others.
Sahasrara (“thousand petals“).
The Chakra of the Crown
Color: violet / white

Location: on top of the head, resting on the crown.

Sahasrara is nothing but pure consciousness,

connecting you to the Universe in its entirety, also
known as "Om".

Achieving a balanced crown chakra is the goal of

any spiritual practice and is not easy to achieve.
Once you are truly balanced, you will have reached
"enlightenment." Enlightening yourself regarding the
secret of who you really are, and transcending
suffering is known as "Nirvana in the Buddhist tradition."

Right to know
AUM for Sahasrara
The Chakra of the Crown
The qualities of Sahastrar chakra include:
•A sense of "oneness" with the universe (also known
as "integration")

• Thoughtless awareness or mental silence

• Certainly, consciousness or awareness of divine

energy. It is through the Sahastrar chakra that you
can connect with the power that created you.

• Through this, you can discover the meaning of

your life. Represents your final destination: the
realization of heaven on earth
Experience and Benefits:
As the Kundalini energy flows through the top of your
head (also known as the fontanel area), it joins your
individual consciousness (atma) to universal
consciousness (paramatma).

This can feel like a powerful pulsing sensation at the

crown of your head. A feeling of fusion and cooler
vibrations often follow these powerful pulsations.

As a result of this experience, you will have gained a new

dimension of consciousness that will allow you to better
perceive the truth. You will have everything you need to
distinguish right from wrong, and truth from falsehood.

Now you can act in perfect harmony. You will no longer feel
confusion or contradiction. You will experience complete
inner calm and perfect joy.
Sodarshan Chakra Kriya
The term comes from the Sanskrit, su, which
means "adequate" or "good"; darshan, which
means "vision"; and kriya, which means

This is one of the best meditations you can practice.
It has considerable powers of transformation.
Personal identity is rebuilt, giving the individual a new
perspective of Being.

Train your mind.

According to the tantra shastras, it can purify your

past karma and the subconscious urges that can
block your fullness.

It balances the 27 facets of life and mental

projection and gives you the pranic power of health
and healing.

and ecstasy in life. Open your inner universe to
relate, co-create and complete the outer universe.

to 31 or 62 minutes. Expert practitioners can extend this
practice to 62 minutes, then 2 ½ hours a day. The maximum

Prana Vidya
Healing your body and emotional blocks
Benefits:
The general purpose is to heal yourself.

It is possible that prana vidya can cure

certain physical "pranic" diseases.

Emotional blockages ("something you

haven't resolved and makes you go round
and round in circles") can be reflected in the
body, and prana vidya could perhaps
dissolve the blockages, allowing energy to
flow freely.

It allows you to continue your sadhana.

Preliminaries:
Ideally, prana vidya should be done early in the
morning (later prana is disturbed) with natural fabrics
and no metallic elements.

Practice prana vidya in a comfortable meditation

position, although it is possible to lie down if you do
not fall asleep.

The idea is that you visualize the prana rising from

muladhara chakra to agya chakra.

Agya chakra is where the universal prana is stored, as

opposed to the personal prana in manipura chakra.

Agya chakra is the personal command center from

where you can direct the prana.
Practice

First bring your awareness to:

• Your body.
• Breath awareness.
• Body space (sthula akasha): be aware of the
emptiness inside and outside of you. Keep in mind
that your skin is a thin boundary that separates you.

• Chakra and nadi awareness.

• Awareness of muladhara chakra. Use the ujjayi
breath and activate the khechari mudra (tongue
lock).
Breathing part 1:
Visualize prana (as streaks of light) rising red
in pingala nadi from muladhara to agya
chakra, repeating SO internally.

Do kumbhaka (retention) for a few seconds

when the prana is in agya.

Then going down sushumna nadi repeat

HAM internally .

Breathing part 2: Body breathing.

Imagine that you are breathing with your
whole body and that agya is the distribution
center.
Breathing part 3: Prana distribution and healing.
Visualize the part of your body (not the heart)
that needs to heal.
Inhale: supply and expansion from the agya
center to the part of the body that needs
healing.
Exhale: withdrawal and contraction back to
agya.

Breathing part 4: finish.

Return prana through sushumna to muladhara
and distribute the Prana naturally.

For each part of the breath, the maximum

number of breaths is 49.
It is also possible to count 27, 18 and 9.
You need to use mala to keep track.
Uttan Kriya, awakening Kundalini
through Divine Grace
Sit in siddhasana, siddha yoni asana, or padmasana.

Keep your eyes closed always.

Breathing is normal in this kriya.

Bring your awareness to the muladhara chakra. Try to

visualize it clearly and observe all the details. You will see
a black shiva lingam made from a gaseous, smoky
substance. The upper and lower part of the lingam are
cut off and in a circle around it is a red baby snake.

The red snake hatchling is trying to uncoil itself so it can

move up through sushumna. As it struggles to break free
and ascends, it emits an angry hiss. The snake's tail will
remain fixed at the bottom of the Shiva lingam, but the
head and body can move up, and go back down again.
Sometimes both the Shiva lingam and the snake can
change their position on the body, so you can even
visualize them for a time in ajna or sahasrara.

The head of the snake is very wide, it is the same

width as your body, but it is not a cobra.

After a while, you may feel your body contract. This

will be followed by a feeling of happiness.

When this happens, move on to the next kriya.

Prana Ahuti (to infuse divine prana)

Sit in siddhasana, siddha yoni asana, or

padmasana.
Close your eyes and breathe normally.

Feel the gentle touch of a divine hand on your

head. The hand is infusing divine prana into your
body, and the prana descends from sahasrara
through the spinal passage. You may experience
it as a wave of cold, heat, energy, electrical
current, or as a stream of wind or liquid.

Its passage will give rise to vibrations, shocks, jolts

or tingling sensations that will go through you.
