Ship Dynamics: Suggestions For Review During Period of Vacation
Ship Dynamics: Suggestions For Review During Period of Vacation
i. Free oscillation of systems with several degrees of freedom: develop free body diagram and
apply second Newton’s law to deduce system of differential equations of motion. Solve the
system for natural frequencies, and from the homogeneous linearly dependent algebraic
system, deduce the mode shapes.
For the ship roll problem, angles are in the initial stability range and take J as the inertia with
respect to a longitudinal axis that passes through G. In the bar problems, consider they are
rigid, springs are linear, and there is no damping in the systems. Take as response functions
the vertical displacement of center of mass and rotation of the rigid bars.
ii. Forced oscillation of systems with several degrees of freedom. Deduce the equations of
motion, assuming the excitation is harmonic cancel out the time dependent terms, and solve
the algebraic system of equations for the complex amplitudes of the response.
For the system on the left calculate the two natural frequencies f1 and f2, and then calculate and
plot response amplitude of the blocks, with a range of frequency 0.5f1-1.5f2. For the second
system, determine the stiffness k so that the angular motion of the bar is null, then calculate and
plot the amplitudes of response for a range of frequencies covering both natural frequencies.
Problem: Plot the streamlines due to the combined flow of a line sink –m at the origin plus lines
sources +m at (a, 0) and (4a, 0). Hint: a cylinder of radius 2a will appear. Plot the pressure
distribution on the body.
