In Indian lore, a group of blind man touch an elephant to learn what it is like. They
each touch a different body part. The blind men who feels a leg says the elephant is
like a pillar; the one who feels the tail says the elephant is like a rope; the one who
feels the trunk says the elephant is like a tree branch; the one who feels the ear says
the elephant is like a hand fan; the one who feels the belly says the elephant is like a
wall; and the one who feels the tusk says the elephant is like a solid pipe. They are all
right; and they are all wrong.

Likewise, when looking at an “organization”, each individual leader often sees the
organization primarily through his or her lens and filters. Those with finance biases see
the organization as an economic revenue generator; those with the marketing see the
organization as a means of creating product or service for customers; those with
technology background see the organization as source of information; those with
human resource backgrounds see the organization’s talent and culture. Each of these
views of organization are right; and they are all wrong

Organizations exist as an integrated whole. They can be dissected into parts, but they
only operate and make sense when the parts work together.
