Provisioning interfaces 1-

This chapter contains procedures for provisioning the interfaces on the L2PA
circuit pack on the OME6130 network element.

Ethernet switching
The Ethernet switching card is a layer 2 switching card, designed for adding
packet switching capabilities to the OME6130 node. The circuit pack enables
service providers to give point-to-point, point-to-multipoint and transparent
LAN services for applications such as internet access, video on demand,
IP-TV. The 2xGE/FX+8x10/100BT L2 622M (L2PA) card differentiates
services and provides different quality of service (QoS) with STM-4/OC-12
uplink bandwidth.

For more details on Layer 2 data services, refer to Data Application Guide,
NTRN15BA and for more information on configurable L2PA circuit pack, refer
to Local Craft Access User Guide, NTP 323-1855-195.

Link Aggregation
Link Aggregation (LAG) allows to increase bandwidth and availability
between two L2PA or between a L2PA and a 802.3ad ethernet switch.

A maximum of eight ports can be aggregated into a Link Aggregation Group

(LAG). A maximum of six LAG can be created per switch. The ports have to
be in the full-duplex mode before they can be aggregated.

The traffic distribution for IP packets among the member ports is based on a
combination of source and destination IP addresses of the packets. For non-IP
packets, traffic is distributed based on the source and destination MAC
addresses. The broadcast, multicast and Data Look-up Failure (DLF) packets
are sent on a single member link.

On failure of a member link, traffic flowing on that link is dynamically

assigned to other member links. Similarly, when a new link is added to the
LAG, some traffic is shifted to the new link.

Bandwidth and Data Services Procedures 323-1855-320 Standard Rel 2.0 Iss 1 Jun 2007
1-2 Provisioning interfaces

Once aggregated, the LAG is treated as a logical port. One can configure
switching parameters like PVID and Ingress Filtering on a logical port, similar
to a physical port. These parameters apply to all the member ports of a LAG.
However, the physical port parameters like speed, auto-negotiation have to be
enabled at each physical port.

Virtual Local Area Network

Virtual Local Area Network ((VLAN(802.1Q)) allows a network to be
logically segmented irrespective of the physical location of devices in the
network. The 802.1Q VLAN bridging and routing functions are incorporated
in the L2PA card.

L2PA supports port based VLANs for forwarding. It is possible to assign each
L2PA port to a VLAN port in a VLAN share broadcast traffic. Ports that do not
belong to that VLAN do not share the broadcast traffic. The ports in a VLAN
are assigned ‘1’ as VLAN ID by default.

L2PA supports port-based VLAN classification, where the Port VLAN

Identifier (PVID) is associated with the physical ports. The VLAN ID (VID)
for an untagged packet is equal to the PVID of the port. When untagged
packets ingresses into a port in L2PA, the PVID and priority of the port are
used to tag the packet (default values for PVID is 1 and priority is 0). After
applying the new tag, the packet is forwarded to the ingress logical block
where switching decisions are made.

When a packet is ready for transmission on an egress port, the tagging attribute
of the VLAN for the said egress port is used to determine if the VLAN tag
should be stripped or not.

Figure 1-1 describes the port based support for VLAN in a network element
having the L2PA card. Here VLAN 1 is formed by Port 1, 2 and WAN 3, and
VLAN 2 is formed by port 5 and WAN 4. In VLAN 1, the broadcast and DLF
packets coming on port 1 are flooded to port 2 and WAN 3.
Figure 1-1

VLAN1 = Port 1, 2 and WAN 3

VLAN2 = Port 5 and WAN 4

Understanding Q-in-Q
This feature is used to provide transparent LAN Services. A service provider
can have their own set of VLANs independent of the customer VLANs.
Similarly, the customers can have VLANs independent of other customers.
This is accomplished by the Q-in-Q feature by adding extra 4 bytes to the
customer packet.

The Source Learning and Destination Lookup happens based on the SPVLAN
and the Source/Destination addresses added to the packet as described in
Figure 1-2. To use the Q-in-Q feature, the switch needs to be put in the Q-in-Q
mode as part of the switch configuration. The Tag Protocol Identification field
is by default 0x88a8, which can be changed to a value that the user wants.

When the switch is in the Q-in-Q mode, the ports can be configured as either
Customer or Provider Network ports. Customer network ports are those which
face the customer and take in the customer tagged packets. Provider network
ports are those which provides ingress and egress provider tagged packets. By
default, the WAN ports are Provider network Ports and the Front Panel Ports
are Customer network ports.

Bandwidth and Data Services Procedures 323-1855-320 Standard Rel 2.0 Iss 1 Jun 2007
1-4 Provisioning interfaces

The PVID configured per port refers to the SPVLAN which gets added to all
the customer packets. The priority field of the S-Tagged packet is the Default
priority field which is configured per port. The AFT parameter cannot be
configured as VLAN tagged as all packets are treated as untagged on the
customer ports. However, AFT can be applied on the Provider network ports.

When the switch mode gets changed from the 802.1q mode to the Q-in-Q
mode, all the switching related objects except LAG are deleted.

Figure 1-2 explains Q-in-Q Tagged Ethernet frames.

Figure 1-2
Q-in-Q Tagged Ethernet Frames

Port Mirroring
The Port Mirroring feature allows a user to monitor traffic on ports of the
switch. The user can configure a list of ports for monitoring traffic (source port
list). The user can also configure a probe port (destination port) on which all
the traffic from the source port is directed or mirrored. A user can enable or
disable a session of port mirroring. The probe port gets the mirrored traffic
only on enabling the port mirroring session. When the port mirroring session
is enabled the probe port does not behave like normal port (will not forward
traffic, GVRP disabled). On disabling the session, the probe port acts as a
normal port.

MST Configuration
The Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP) component complies with IEEE
802.1S by efficiently navigating Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) traffic
over separate interfaces for multiple instances of Spanning Tree. IEEE
802.1W, Rapid Spanning Tree is supported through the IEEE 802.1S
implementation.

The difference between the Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) and
Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) (IEEE 802.1D) is the ability to configure and
recognize full duplex connectivity and ports which are connected to end
stations. The difference enables RSTP to rapidly transition to the 'Forwarding'
state and to suppress the topology change notification PDUs where possible.

Functional Description
The MSTP component supports communication of networking devices
assigned to any given VLAN throughout a Bridged LAN. The MSTP, RSTP or
STP protocol must be operating on the devices.

MSTP allows frames assigned to different VLANs to follow separate paths,

each based on an independent Multiple Spanning Tree Instance (MSTI). The
MSTIs reside within Multiple Spanning Tree (MST) regions composed of
LANs and MSTP Bridges. These Regions, the other Bridges and LANs are
connected into a single Common Spanning Tree (CST). MSTP connects all
Bridges and LANs with a single Common and Internal Spanning Tree (CIST).
The CIST supports automatic determination of each MST region and chooses
the maximum possible extent of each MST region. The connectivity calculated
for the CIST provides the CST for interconnecting these regions and an
Internal Spanning Tree (IST) within each Region.

MSTP ensures the following:

• The frames with a given VLAN identifier (VID) are uniquely assigned to
the MSTIs or the IST within the region.
• All the networking devices within the MST Region consistently assign
VIDs.
• The CST and the stable connectivity of each MSTI matches with the IST
at the boundary of the region.
The Bridged LAN, using MSTP, connects all LANs and networking devices
throughout the network while allowing frames belonging to different VLANs
to take different paths within the region.

All bridges, whether they use STP, RSTP or MSTP, send information in
configuration messages via Bridge Protocol Data Units (BPDU). The BPDUs
assign port roles based on one or more spanning trees. The Port roles determine
each ports participation in the network. The information communicated is
known as the spanning tree priority vector. The BPDU structure for each of

Bandwidth and Data Services Procedures 323-1855-320 Standard Rel 2.0 Iss 1 Jun 2007
1-6 Provisioning interfaces

these protocols is unique. A MSTP bridge will transmit the appropriate BPDU
depending on the received type of BPDU from a particular port. An MST
region is made of one or more MSTP bridges sharing a common MST
Configuration Identifier, using the same MSTIs, and connected to bridges
equipped to receive and transmit MSTP BPDUs.

Association between VLAN and MSTI

A set of VLANs can be associated with an MST instance (MSTI). It is not
possible to associate one VLAN with more than one MSTI.

Note 1: MSTP is backward compatible with a switch, which is configured

in STP or RSTP mode.
Note 2: L2PA supports up to four MSTI.
Differentiated Services
Differentiated Services (DiffServ) is a method of offering quality-of-service
(QoS) treatment for network traffic without the need for a resource reservation
protocol.

An administrator specifically provisions the network equipment (switches,

routers) to identify the following:
• The classes of traffic in the network
• The QoS treatment on the classes of traffic received
DiffServ controls the traffic acceptance and transmission throughout the
DiffServ domain, and the bandwidth guarantee within the network nodes. By
controlling the acceptance, the transmission and the bandwidth, a policy-based
range of services is established.

Access Control Lists

Quality of Service in L2PA is implemented via Differentiated Services
(Diffserv) and Access Control Lists (ACL) for ingress actions and Class of
Service (CoS) queuing for egress actions. The QoS component of L2PA
supports Layer2 - Layer4 classification and provides multiple QoS actions to
be taken on the traffic. ACLs offering a subset of DiffServ functionality
provide a simple method for configuring typical Firewall-like QoS behavior,
while DiffServ provides a richer set of QoS actions, which will lead towards
implementing end-to-end DiffServ domains. These services can be viewed as
building blocks, which can be used to provide end users with higher
applications like Metro Ethernet Forum Services.

The UI allows you to configure the following types of Access Control Lists
(ACLs):
• MAC ACL - Filters on all fields from Layer2 header
• Extended IP ACL - Filters on all fields from IP header

Optical Multiservice Edge 6130 323-1855-320 Standard Rel 2.0 Iss 1 Jun 2007
Provisioning interfaces 1-7

To configure ACLs, the following steps need to be performed:

• Create an ACL rule by specifying Match filters
• Create an ACL and associate ACL rules with this ACL. All the rules
associated to an ACL are treated as a logical "OR" expression. It is possible
to associate up to 9 rules to an ACL. An ACL rule can be associated with
more than one ACL.
• For each combination of ACL and rule, an action should be associated. The
allowed actions for ACLs are Send and Drop. If the action is Send, then
the following additional actions are possible:
— Assign CoS Queue
— Redirect to a Port
Note 1: In a case of conflict of action on the two ACL rules pointing to a
same class of traffic, the action will be taken in accordance to the rule that
is associated later to the ACL.
Note 2: When Send action is selected for an ACL rule, further actions such
as Assign to a Queue or Redirect to a Port cannot be assigned. However,
this restriction does not apply for a Diffserv class and further actions can
be assigned to the class on selecting Send.

Forwarding Database
Learning, forwarding and aging happen according to IEEE 802.1q. The
learning mode that is supported is Independent Vlan Learning (IVL) defined
in 802.1q. Statically Unicast and Multicast addresses can be provisioned. The
statically learned entries take precedence over the dynamically learnt entries.
The maximum number of learnt entries in the Forwarding Database per Bridge
is 16k (16384). This value includes dynamically learnt entries as well as
statically (Unicast and Multicast) added entries.

The maximum number of Static Unicast Entries that can be added per bridge
is 1000. This value is shared between all ports. The maximum number of Static
Multicast entries that can be added per Bridge (software) is 256.

Learning can be enabled or disabled on a per port basis. The three modes of
learning are:
• Disable Learning - In this mode, dynamic learning for that port is
disabled. Still statically added entries can be configured on that port.
• Enable Learning (limited by 16k addresses) - In this mode, dynamic
learning is enabled on that port.
• Limit Learning - In this mode, dynamic limit on the number of addresses
learnt on that port can be limited. Here, learning can be limited on a port to
a value between (20 - 600).

Bandwidth and Data Services Procedures 323-1855-320 Standard Rel 2.0 Iss 1 Jun 2007
1-8 Provisioning interfaces

The default value of the learning mode is Enable Learning (Limitless

learning).

Aging can be configured on switch basis with values ranging from (10 -
1000000) sec. Aging does not apply to statically added entries.

Provisioning cross-connections 2-

This chapter contains procedures and operation for cross-connects on the

OME6130 network element.

The cross-connect application is used for creating cross-connects in a network

element. You can provision 1WAY, 2WAY, protected, or unprotected
cross-connects of different capacities. The numbering scheme used is VC/VT
capacity-Chassis-Slot-Port-TUG3/STS # (K)-TUG2/VT-(L)-VC12/VT # (M).

Cross-connects can be created for different types of facilities.

E1/DS1, E3/DS3, Ethernet and STM-1/4/OC3/12 or STM-16/OC-48. The

types of cross-connects that can be provisioned on the OME6130 network
element are-–add, drop, pass-through, and hairpin cross-connects.

Two cross-connect modes are available-–1WAY and 2WAY. Refer to Table 2-1
for details regarding various parameters associated with the cross-connects.

Bandwidth and Data Services Procedures 323-1855-320 Standard Rel 2.0 Iss 1 Jun 2007
2-2 Provisioning cross-connections

Table 2-1
Cross-connect parameters

Cross connect field Description

Connection Id A user defined string assigned to the cross-connect. The

string can be used to search the cross-connect list.

Traffic status This attribute gives the status of whether the cross-connect
is carrying traffic. The OperStatus is evaluated using SF/SD,
circuit pack presence, admin-Up/Down and
External-Command status on all the channels involved in
the cross-connect. The status values are:
• UP - Traffic is being carried
• DOWN - Traffic is not carried
• DEGRADE - Traffic is being carried but is degraded

Capacity Bandwidth of the cross-connects. In OME6130, the possible

capacities are:
• VC11/VT1.5
• VC12/VT2
• VC3/STS-1
• VC4/STS-3c
• VC4_4c/STS-12c

Source Typically a cross-connect is made of two channels. These

two channels are identified as source and destination. In the
Node Manager page, the first channel selected becomes the
source channel and the second channel selected becomes
the destination channel.

Source Protection This attribute specifies the protect channel if the source
channel has a protecting pair. (This refers to the switch-mate
of the source channel). This is not applicable to a WAN
connection and hence is shown as “—NA—“.

Active Source If the source channel of the cross connect has a protect
channel (switch-mate), this attribute reflects the channel
through which the traffic is selected. If the traffic is selected
from the source channel, then the status is WORK. If the
traffic is selected from the protect channel (or the
switch-mate), then the status is PROTECT. If the source
channel has no protect channel (switch-mate) then this
status is always WORK. This is not applicable to a WAN
connection and hence is shown as “—NA—“.

Table 2-1 (continued)

Cross-connect parameters

Cross connect field Description

Dir This refers to the directionality of the cross-connects—

1WAY or 2WAY.

Destination Typically a cross-connect is made of two channels. These

two channels are identified as source and destination. In the
Node Manager page, the first channel selected becomes the
source channel and the second channel selected becomes
the destination channel.

Destination Protection This attribute specifies the protect channel if the destination
channel has a protecting pair.

Active Destination If the destination channel of the cross connect has a protect
channel (switch-mate), this attribute reflects the channel
through which the traffic is selected. If the traffic is selected
from the destination channel, the status is WORK. If the
traffic is selected from the protect channel (or the
switch-mate), the status is PROTECT. If the destination
channel has no protect channel (switch-mate), the status is
always WORK.

Procedure 2-8
Provisioning LCAS

Use this procedure to provision the LCAS for the WAN interface.

Link capacity adjustment scheme (LCAS) is a protocol over WAN facilitating

dynamic management of virtually concatenated data streams. LCAS is a real
time control mechanism to increase/decrease capacity of a virtually
concatenated group without affecting traffic. LCAS autonomously removes
the failed members temporarily from a group. When failure condition is
cleared, LCAS adds members back into the group without affecting traffic.

Note: Ethernet traffic may be affected if LCAS settings are not consistent
at both end points. Ensure that both ends are provisioned the same (LCAS
enabled or disabled for both).

This procedure is applicable to the following cards:

• 8xETH
• 2xGE
• 4x10/100BT+4x100FXL1
• 2xFX/GE+8x10/100BT L2 622M
This procedure allows you to view or configure the following parameters:
• VCG (View only)
• Status (View only)
• Direction (View only)
• Transmit LCAS
• TxCTRL (Tx Channel) (View only)
• RxCTRL (Rx Channel) (View only)
