ASSIGNMENT 1

This document will guide you in your first assignment on “Financial Statement Analysis”. In
order to accomplish this task, you must first pick a publicly traded company. You can select
any company from any stock market. You must submit name and/or ticker of the company
you pick till November 11th, 2020 Wednesday on the questionnaire available on moodle
course page. This term project will account for 10% of your overall course grade.

It is wise to get an approval of the proposed company you will analyze before further
working on it. Conglomerates, banks and some financial service companies may be difficult
for your first financial statement analysis. You may write a report which is three to ten pages
and we can discuss your findings in class. But with the tables and figures your report may
be longer. Do not hesitate to show all your findings if you exceed ten pages. In short, there is
no limit to the amount of effort you would like to put into your assignment. I strongly
recommend you to write an Executive Summary at the beginning of your assignment that
emphasize key points of your analysis and a brief conclusion at the end about the insights
you gained about the company, its strengths and weakness, your recommendations to your
readers.

In your report, you will analyze the financial performance of a publicly traded company.
You will consider different techniques and provide a thorough analysis. As a first step learn
the fiscal year of the company. Do not forget it is not always same as the calendar year. Then
collect your financial data and make sure your report mentions the following analysis tools.

 Comparative Analysis (horizontal analysis)

 Commonsize Analysis (vertical analysis)
 Ratio Analysis (liquidity, activity, leverage-solvency, profitability-duPont, valuation)

These are some of the possible tools you may consider in your financial analysis. It is
important to remember that this assignment will be your own independent work. If you use
remarks from a source, you should always clearly acknowledge. You will be required to
upload your assignment to moodle platform. In case it is over the size limits, you may send
your assignment in an email.

You will have the following deadlines for this assignment:

18 November : Propose the name of the company you want to analyze
26 November :(optional) Deadline for submitting draft assignment if you want feedback
7 December : Deadline for handing in Final Assignment
