Instructions
• This is an individual lab. You will perform the tasks individually and submit the
required files at the end of the lab.
• Please see the rubric at the end of the lab for marks distribution.
• Plagiarism or any hint thereof will be dealt with strictly. Any incident where plagiarism
is caught, all students involved will be given zero marks, regardless of who copied
whom. Multiple such incidents will result in disciplinary action being taken.
Steady State Stability:
When the load on a line is equal to the Surge Impedance Loading, the voltage profile across
the line is flat and the line’s net reactive power losses are zero. For loads above the SIL, the
line consumers reactive power and the load’s voltage magnitude is below the sending end
value. Conversely, for loads below the SIL, the line actually generates reactive power and the
load’s voltage magnitude is above the sending end value.
Inductors and capacitors are used on medium length and long transmission lines to increase line Loadability and
to maintain voltages near rated values. Series capacitors are sometimes used on long lines to increase line
loadability. Capacitor banks are installed in series with each phase conductor at selected points along a
line. Their e¤ect is to reduce the net series impedance of the line in series with the capacitor banks,
thereby reducing line-voltage drops and increasing the steady-state stability limit.
Lab Work
Lab task 3
• Now add the series capacitor at the sending and receiving end of the line to increase the line
loadability and voltage regulation.
• Make generator, bus bar, transmission line and load settings as in previous task.
• Observe the changes at different locations in the circuit by varying the load.
• Discuss the behavior of the circuit at different loads in your lab report i) at SIL ii) above SIL iii)
below SIL.
• Observe the improvement in voltage regulation and line loadibility limits.
