4 – Solving Absolute Value Eq & Inequ and Applications Name: _____________________________

Algebra 2 Honors Date _________________

Solve each equation algebraically.

1. −3x = 9 2. 8 3x − 10 − 12 = 20

3. 4 ( 2x − 5) = 4 4. 5 2x − 6 = 24

5. 9 − 2x = 10 + 3x 6. 3x − 8 = 5x

Absolute Value Application Problems

7. A rainstorm begins as a drizzle, builds up to a heavy rain, and then drops back to a drizzle. The rate
r (in inches per hour) at which it rains is given by the function r = −0.5 t − 1 + 0.5 , where t is the time
(in hours). Graph the function. Determine for how long it rains and when it rains the hardest.
8. Mr. Jones wants to place a chimney on his roof. It is recommended that the chimney be set at a
height of at least 30 feet. The height of the roof is described by the function
4
𝑓(𝑥) = − 3 |𝑥 − 10| + 40 where x is the distance along the width of the roof. Where should Leroy
place the chimney if the house is 45 feet wide?

Solve each inequality algebraically. Then graph the solution set on a number line.

Absolute Value Application Problems

15. The horizontal bar used in gymnastics events should be placed 110.25 inches above the ground,
with a tolerance of 0.4 inch. Write an absolute value inequality for the acceptable bar heights.

16. A manufacturer of sleeping bags suggests that one model is best suited for temperatures between
30°F and 60°F, inclusive. Write an absolute value inequality for this temperature range.
