GE 1 Understanding the Self

Last Journal

This subject has provided me a lot of new knowledge, not just about other topics but
especially about myself. Understanding the Self is one of those interesting courses I’ve taken so
far, as it encompasses a wide variety of topics; from growth, culture, philosophies, self, to social
relationships. Although I have been very lacking in this subject, I can say I’ve learn quite a lot. I
learned how other cultures practices their beliefs, how our childhood affects the way we grow
into adulthood, how to identify how I view myself; what kind of an individual I am, am I a
collectivist of individualist? Am I a free soul or one who carefully weighs other’s opinion about
oneself? But most importantly, it taught me to value my sexuality more, that I am not alone and
that there are those who tolerate people like me.

The most memorable part of this whole subject for me was when we had a discussion
about LGBTQ+. For the most part, I stayed silent, as I always was. This kind of topic has always
been sensitive for me. Although I know myself and I have accepted myself, there were only a
few moments in my life where I have felt accepted. During this discussion, I was extremely
moved when some of my classmates spoke up about how accepting they are to LGBTQ+
members. My emotions were further amplified when our instructor spoke about how she’s an
ally, and that there’s nothing wrong with being who we are. As long as we’re not doing anything
wrong or hurting anyone, then we’re good. It made me feel seen. It made me feel like I’m a part
of this society. Even though it was brief, it really was a happy moment for me; one that would
stay in my memory for a long time.

One thing I’m most thankful for this subject is our instructor, Ms. Geralen Catubig. I’ve
been under her before and I love how fun and easygoing she is but rightfully strict when it comes
to grading. My favorite thing about her is how she livens up the discussion. It feels as though
we’re chatting with a friend. I also like how she explains things to our level. She doesn’t use
complicated words and sometimes would use interesting analogy in order for us to effectively
understand the lesson. In a way, she feels closer as a teacher. In terms of things that needs
improving; I’d say PowerPoint presentation or visual aids. Ms. Catubig herself is very effective
enough as she is, but as we’re taking online classes, it would’ve been better if the PowerPoint
presentations were more refined. Since some students may not be able to see her while she’s
talking and doing her hand gestures because of poor Internet connection, I think a thorough
visual aid would be beneficial to everyone. But even then, I think it didn’t hinder much to our
learning. For me, I think she was a very efficient and effective teacher until the end of term.
