The problem with plastics is, most of them are not biodegradable. Plastics degrade very slowly and a
plastic cup takes up to four hundred fifty years to decompose.

Humans created huge landfills.

Landfills not only spoil the scenery, but they are also very bad for the environment, mostly because they
release toxins.

Of the total amount of plastics sent to landfills, 79% is transported to the oceans, and less than 10% is
recycled.

Research shows that more than 800 coastal and marine species are affected because of plastic waste.
Another issue is, not all plastic can be recycled. Why? Because plastic recycling is a complex process and
very expensive.

The issue of plastic pollution also occurs due to the lack of plastic waste management policies,
governance systems, resources, capacity and infrastructure.

Many local governments lack sufficient plastic waste collection. Plastic waste recovery and recycling
systems are also not well established and plastic recycling businesses are commonly operated by
informal or small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
