Diagram labelling – Answer key

Answer 7: respiratory movements OR signals

An important line in the text here is: 'If the embryo’s electro-receptors detect the presence of a
predatory fish in the vicinity...' The meaning is similar to 'alert the young ray'. If you follow the line
in the text, you can see that an example of what they might detect is 'signals that are characteristic
of the respiratory movements of potential predators such as sharks.'

So, both 'respiratory movements' and 'signals' are acceptable answers for this one. (Sometimes it
is possible that there is more than one correct answer.)

Answer 8: tails

In the text, it says '[t]he embryos keep their tails in constant motion so as to pump water and allow
them to breathe...' 'so as... to allow them to breath' has the same meaning as 'in order to breathe'.

Answer 9: electric currents

In this answer you're looking for a line which has the same meaning as 'stop sending' in the text. It
is 'ceases transmitting', and so you can see the answer is 'electric currents'.
