About This Object

Circular wooden pulley wheel with hollowed sides, square metal block
inserted into the middle. There are positions for two fixings on either side of
the metal block – one still has iron fixing in situ. ‘VI’ inscribed on one side. You
can still see the score lines from the insertion of the metal centre. Sheaves
would have been made of lignum vitae or ash, with the shell being made in
two halves. The hole cut right through the centre was for a wooden pin. The
sheave was fitted on to the pin and rotated inside the shell when the block
was in use. The shell has a channel or groove shaped into its outer faces.
This was to accept a rope lashing that would hold the block in place.

On opposite side metal insert has square ‘lugs’ on either side – through which
fixings (mentioned earlier) would pass – one still in situ.

A broad arrow is marked on the metal centre – pointing outwards – towards

corner.
