Question:
For the retaining wall shown in Figure 1: (Rankine Earth Pressure Theory & Neglect all
passive pressure force)
a) Calculate the factors of safety with respect to overturning, and bearing capacity.
b) Calculate factors of safety with respect to overturning, when the ground water rises
to 1 m below the surface.

o The ultimate bearing pressure of

the soil is 260 kNm/2,
o The coefficient of friction is 0.5
o The unit weight of reinforced
concrete is 24 kN/m3.
