Streichquartet wurde in der Zeit vom 12. bis 14, Jui 1960 in Dresden komponiert und ist dem Andenken der Opfer des Faschis mus und des Krieges gewidmet, Gleichzeitig rbeitete Schostakowitsch an der Filmmusik "Funf Tage ~ FUnf Nuchte". Der Komponist cerkliste, dass der Inhalt des Quartets wesent- lich von dem die Zerstorung und die Wieder herstellung Dresdens schildernden Film beeinflusst und vom Gedenken an die Men Schen getragen sei, die unter faschistischer Herrschaft und dem Schrecken des Krieges ‘elite hitten. In diesem Quartet verwen- det Schostakowitsch 2um ersten Mal Zitate thematischer und Klanglicher Art aus fruhe- ren Werken (Symphonie Nr. 1, 5, 10, 11, ‘Lady Macbeth von Mzensk’ und Klaviertrio Nr. 2). Femer ist in jedem Satz das Thema D-S-C-H (Anagramm des Namens Dmitri Schostakowitsch) verarbeitet, Die Erstauffuhrung fand am 2. Oktober 1960 {im Glinka-Saat zu Leningrad statt. Nr. 2140) lieferbar. String Quartet No. 8 dedicated tothe memory of the vietims of fascism and war, was written in Dresden between 12 and 14 July 1960. Work on the Quartet proceeded simulta neously with incidental music to the film "Five Days —Five Nights”. The composer said thatthe subject-matter of this Quartet was suggested by the film and the recollections ‘of the people who had lived under fascist rule and experienced the horrors of the war In this Quartet Shostakovich resorts for the first time to quoting themes and intonations from his earlier works (from his Symphonies, 'No. 1,5, 10, 11, Lady Macbeth of Misensk? ‘and Piano Trio No. 2). In each movement is ‘encountered a theme based on the notes D, Es (E-lat in the German notation, standing here for the leter "S"), C and Hi (B in the ‘German notation) and forming an anagram of the name Dmitsi Shostakovich, ‘The work was first performed atthe Glinka Hall in Leningrad on October 2, 1960.
