Heinz, a manufacturer of ketchup, uses a particular machine to dispense 16 ounces of its

ketchup into containers. From many years of experience with the particular dispensing
machines, Heinz knows the amount of the product in each container follows a normal
distribution with a mean of 16 ounces and standard deviation of 0.15 ounces. A sample of
50 containers filled last hour revealed the mean amount per container was 16.07 ounces.
Does this evidence suggest that the mean amount dispensed is different from 16 ounces?
Use the 0.05 significance level.
(mean μ, standard deviation σ, level of significance α = 0.05)

(a) State the null hypothesis and the alternate hypothesis.

Answer:

Null hypothesis:
H0: μ = 16
Alternative hypothesis:
H1: μ ≠ 16

(b) State the decision rule.

Answer:

α = 0.05

Two-tailed test = (1- α) /2 = 1-0.05/2 = 0.475= ±1.96 [Z table]

The decision rule for the two-tailed is

Reject H0 if Z>1.96 or Z<-1.96

(c) Determine the value of the test statistic.

Answer: μ= 16 x̅= 16.07, σ= 0.15, n=50

x́−µ
Z=
σ /√n
16.07−16
= 0.15 /√ 50
= 3.30
z statistic value is 3.3

(d) What is your decision regarding the null hypothesis?

Answer: Reject the Ho and show that is different from the 16 ounces.
