The term “Mass Communication” refers to the transmission of information by media

such as newspapers, television, radio or internet to a large and diverse audience from
communities extending out to the entire country, region or continent. Thus, mass media can
have a large influence on millions of people. In this essay, the influence of global mass on
Caribbean youths and strategies taken by the government to reduce this influence will be
discussed.
The global media, including the internet, television, books, magazines and other has
served as a means to connect millions of people worldwide to exchange information. As a
result, global media has an increasing influence on the lives of many young persons. For
instance, through television, violent behaviour, obscene language or inappropriate clothing is
shown in many TV programmes. This has influenced many youths, especially in the
Caribbean to replicate these actions and hence cause them to believe that violent behaviour
and other acts are normalized and acceptable to do in society. However, the media can also
have a positive impact where various TV programmes influence youths to obey litter laws,
stop or avoid smoking, and preserve the environment. Secondly, foreign news networks can
bring to Caribbean people international news that affects world politics through global mass
media. However, some of these networks tend to convey or twist the displayed information.
This causes Caribbean youths to develop opinions and views based on possible false or
biased information that may be inappropriate for the Caribbean. Also, the moral values
presented in some of these programmes may be harmful to adolescents.
Many share the view that the negative influence of global media has impacted the
Caribbean greatly. As a result, the Ministry of Culture can reduce the influence of global
mass media on the people of my country by limiting the number of channels providing
programmes with violence and sexual contents and encouraging more TV programmes that
promote proper cultural and educational views. The minister can also educate citizens on the
potential danger of mass media can do to the attitudes and values of young impressionable
minds and hence strongly advice parental control over mediums such as the internet and
television. Thirdly, the minister can pass legislation requiring that specific hours be dedicated
to programmes of an educational or cultural nature appropriate to the country.

The role of global mass media has made a remarkable impact on humans
worldwide and society itself. As so, they are many pros and cons to it, however, one should
consider the effects mass media can have on themselves and their loved ones. The
government of countries should also monitor the mass media since the usage of different
forms of mass media increase as a result of mainly the youths of these countries who are
the future leaders of society and so is necessary to monitor the factors which influence the
lives of these youths.
