What is COP26?
Conference of the Parties, or COP, is an annual event held to ensure continuous international
communication between countries and governmental organizations worldwide to inspire climate
action and achieve climate justice. In 2015, parties around the world agreed in COP21 to update and
strengthen their pledges and commitment to limiting earth’s warming to 1.5 degrees every five years
as entailed in their respective Nationally Determined Contributions or NDCs; making the COP26 the
first Conference to showcase revisions in the existing NDCs and commitments.
One of the biggest disappointments in the recent climate conference is the last-minute change
decided by the committee in the final agreement regarding actions towards unabated coal;
attenuating from “phase out” to “phase down”. Coal-reliant countries pushed for a leaner
commitment and deferred the withdrawal of coal until 2040. This had a discerningly negative
exposition to the entire COP community and the world by extension.
Climate Finance
In 2009, developed nations committed to total funding of 100 billion USD per year to developing
countries to accelerate climate efforts. However, with “deep regret” the UN committee estimated a
total of 79.6 billion USD in 2019. Moreover, a huge portion of the funding comes from loans which
would eventually increase the financial burden of developing countries in funding climate actions. On
