CPEC Projects

 What is CPEC?
China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is a framework of regional connectivity. CPEC will
not only benefit China and Pakistan but will have positive impact on Iran, Afghanistan,
Central Asian Republic, and the region. The enhancement of geographical linkages
having improved road, rail, and air transportation system with frequent and free
exchanges of growth and people to people contact, enhancing understanding through
academic, cultural, and regional knowledge and culture.

 Projects
Many projects come under the CPEC including railway lines, wind energy project,
hydropower project and coal-fired project and highways project.
In this study I will pick two projects that come under the CPEC and will discuss about
them.

KKH Phase II (Thakot -Havelian Section)

Thakot-Havelian (118km) is in early harvest Project category, and it is in implementation
phase after signing of commercial and financial agreements. Its starting point is from
Havelian and ending point is Thakot. It is a 06-lane access-controlled MW, 79 Class 2
Highway. Cost of this project is 1,315 US million dollars.
It is very beneficial in transportation of goods from Gawadar port to Khunjerab pass.
This is a hilly area and the importance of this type of highway is very crucial.
It reduces the time of transportation from port to border and the hassle also.

It improves the infrastructure of the Pakistan and helps the locals in better travelling on
highway.
884MW Suki Kinari Hydropower Project, KP

This project falls in the energy sector of CPEC. Technology that is used in this project is
hydel and the installed capacity is 870 (MW). It is under construction and work is 70%
completed. Cost of this project is 2000 US million dollars.

In the last two decades, Pakistan was facing energy issues very severely. Demand of
electricity was very high, but the production rate was very low. Suki Kinari Hydropower
project based on green energy and supports sustainability. So, this also helps Pakistan
to reduce pollution in the atmosphere.

As we all know that China needed Gawadar port 24 hours, and the lack of energy
supply could cause severe problems in the process of the goods. To run other CPEC
projects, energy sector needs to be fully prepared.
It improves the strategic partnership between both the countries and attract investors for
future.
