TERMS IN GYMNASTICS

ABDUCTION – refers to the movement that are performed outward from the center of the body.

ACRO – the tumbling skills exercised on the beam or floor

ACTIVE STRETCHING – stretching exercise is requiring a partner to assist in the manipulation of the limb
beyond its normal range of movement.

AERIAL - a skill such as cartwheel or walkover which is performed without the hands touching the floor
or the base of the apparatus.

AGILITY -the ability to rapidly change the direction while maintaining dynamic balance.

ARABESQUE – a type of pose where one leg is extended behind the body and supporting leg is bent or
straight.

ARCH – a position in which the gymnast’s back is curved backwards and chest is open.

ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS – ALSO CALLED DISPLAY GYMNASTICS, CONSISTING OF MOVEMENTS


PERFORMED ON THE FLOOR, BEAM, BARS, OR VAULT.

AXIAL MOVEMENT – are movements done by a part or parts of the body in place, such as bending,
lifting, twisting, forming a circle and the like.

BAL;ANCE – a static position which requires the gymnast to keep the shape of their body still for a short
period of time, usually performed on the beam.

BEND – to flex, to bend a joint

BRIDGE – also known as backbend, this describes a position assumed when the body forms a bridge with
the hands and feet touching the floor and the arms and legs straight and close together.

CARTWHEEL – is a movement where gymnast turn sideways from a standing position, to handstand and
then back to standing position.

CHASSE – a dance movement where one foot looks to be chasing the other

COMBATIVE STUNTS – are stunts perform by two or more participants in a competition to show
strength, balance agility, and endurance.

COMPOSITION – are movements put together in a routine.
