Video Analysis: Literacy

Summary

In the video we watched, we look at what is literacy, we look at how understandings the
literacy had evolved and beyond it; what wider essential skills are needed for people to thrive in
their communities of the future. In the past we understood the literacy, simply as ability to read
and write but today we understand it is more complex. 60 years ago, literacy is define to read
and write of simple sentences, 40 years ago, literacy requires for effective functioning, and 30
years later, literacy is an ability to understand reading materials with rhyme to achieve your
goals. Literacy is a part of learning of children that enables the goals, to develop their
knowledge and potential, and to fully to participate in their wider community. It promotes media
literacy and information literacy, financial literacy, health literacy and critical literacy. Literacy is
most commonly defined as the ability to read and write. But it’s not as simple as it sounds.
Reading and writing abilities vary across different cultures and contexts, and these too are
constantly shifting. Nowadays, ‘reading’ encompasses complex visual and digital media as well
as printed material. Literacy is vital to ensuring your child has the best chance to succeed in
their schooling and everyday life. Literacy allows us to make sense of a range of written, visual
and spoken texts including books, newspapers, magazines, timetables, DVDs, television and
radio programs, signs, maps, conversations and instructions.
